As in, extinction.
Watching Pence in the debate I was struck by the incongruity of him: an old, white guy trying to operate in a different world. A dinosaur. I don't think the Republican Party has seen it coming. The future looming in front of him: here he is debating a younger, Afro-Asian woman who is light years ahead of him in terms of our culture today, the coming new populations in our country, the music we play, the loss of old cultural norms everywhere, even the words we invent and speak.
In a conversation with a friend, he pointed out that Kamala Harris could be in office for the next ten years: in a scenario where Joe and Kamala are elected but Joe for whatever reason retires after 2 years and Kamala takes over and then runs for 2 terms after.
Is that even possible?
What do you think?

(5,781 posts)We hear about the demise of the (fill in name of party here) about every decade. Neither party will go anywhere until a) they both get wiped out of b) we change forms of government to a dictatorship.

(38,958 posts)They will likely be making some changes, but they are overdue for that anyway.

(13,912 posts)if demographic changes hold, eventually the Repubs will be forced to moderate.

(67,089 posts)the rest of the nation and world, he looks IMO like a blabbering fool with his head up Trump's butt. Millions and millions are so fed up with the GOP gang.

(11,949 posts)They are already a minority part kept in play by the EC and Gerrymandering. But even that is starting to fail them. After years of talk about demographics changing the country the change is getting large enough to matter. We will not likely win TX or GA this round, but the keep slipping closer.
If they lose this time by 2030 they will still dominate in the small rural states, but less all the time.
And its not just a racial change driving the movement as everyone predicted. What no one predicted 15 years ago is the extremely rapid secularism of America. Already well over 20% of Americans are not religious. The republicans are quickly getting a god problem.

(3,401 posts)State houses and governorships were won by the Tea Party push which was really a racist publicity stunt aimed at a black president by the Koch Brothers. It worked and ALEC formed and started writing copycat legislation and gerrymandering tricks that has taken years to challenge in the courts. It will take just as long to change it.
It wont be the Koch Brothers next time but it will be Old Money And Corporate dealers coming for the thrown as soon as they clean off the stage on Inauguration Day.

(11,949 posts)And we have to be careful the Democratic Party does not fall under the sway of their money. Thats why Im so excited by the grass roots money we are getting this time. It helps eliminate the need for corporate funding. Act Blue has really created a new Paradigm.
Have a nice evening.

(3,401 posts)But I would make a law to outlaw corporate funding that overturns citizens united decision enabled in my first week if I were Biden.

(1,832 posts)That's why they are so willing to cheat their way into power and support DT no matter what. They know that the demographics are against them and they are standing at the precipice of irrelevancy. The big unknown is whether they will stoop to violence to maintain power. I pray not.

(9,110 posts)Hes not exactly young. Also, the next four years are likely to be challenging in ways we dont know how to expect, which will make it rough on some Democratic incumbents.
Im not sure the Trumpie madness has run its course in the Republican Party. Theres still a lot of that where that came from, especially in the Deep South and southern Appalachia. But I think that the general electorate might be on the road to recovery.
I think the Republican Party may still be around six to eight years from now. But it may be a fragmented party chiefly confined to red rural states.

(11,949 posts)Lots of independent contractors who make 200-400K use plans covered by the ACA. At first they bitched about the steep cost increase. And they were very steep for that income level as they should be. But now they are used to and count on the good parts. Lifetime out of pocket costs limits, no pre-existing problems, kids in till 26 etc. The republicans cant lose this group. They are often community leaders and have sway.
