NYT: "Talk Radio Is Turning Millions of Americans Into Conservatives"

Article describes the influence right wing radio has had since the 1960s. Some interesting quotes:

This was true of conservative radio long before the current generation of talk radio hosts emerged in the 1980s. By the early 1960s, a group of AM radio broadcasters had built an informal national syndicated network of hundreds of radio stations; the largest of the broadcasters, a fundamentalist preacher in New Jersey named Carl McIntire, reached an estimated audience of 20 million listeners a week (which, for sake of comparison, is as many as Rush Limbaugh reportedly hit at his peak four decades later). Americans could tune into a station airing conservative programming all day, every day.

By 1963 President John F. Kennedy was so worried about what an aide called this “formidable force in American life today,” which was able to “harass local school boards, local librarians and local government bodies,” that he authorized targeted Internal Revenue Service audits and the use of the Federal Communications Commission’s Fairness Doctrine to silence these pesky conservative broadcasters. The result was the most successful episode of government censorship of the last half century.

Conservative broadcasters have never forgotten it, and it is a key reason that a conspiracist mind-set has such a grip on listeners. Since 2003, Rush Limbaugh, who got his start working in radio as a teenager in the mid-1960s, has mentioned the Fairness Doctrine on nearly 150 episodes. He credits the rise of talk radio to the lifting of the Fairness Doctrine in 1987 by the Reagan administration. And he worries that the left could at any moment use a revived Fairness Doctrine to silence conservative radio. As Mr. Limbaugh put it in January, “They’ve been trying to nullify or negate me” for three decades.

13. Yes, everyone has biases, but RWHR reinforces and metastisizes them.

A brain diet of media that emphasizes empathy, shared experience, judge not lest ye be judged, etc. can overcome biases and lead to less judgement and less conservatism.

Like only Terry Gross instead of Rush Limbaugh.

I'm sure it's more comfortable to believe that only those "other people" are influenced, but right now I think it's more important to be realistic than comfortable.

34. It does far more than that, particularly in environments where they monopolize the market

The constant drumbeat, the way they have hours to develop a point and push their spin becomes "the new normal", the views which "most" people in an area have.

It happens all the faster when there are multiple talk shows, all to the right, and people casually listening to the radio decide which one they prefer, so there seems to be choice, but all the choices are in one direction.

There are large swaths of the country where any part of the radio dial that isn't about sports or music is stuffed to the gills with conservative proselytizers, secular and religious. There's nowhere they'll hear people to the center or left explaining their views at length, just the spin doctors providing a negative framing of those views. And where there are choices, it harps on how untrustworthy those other sources are, so you should listen only to them and other conservatives.

41. Exactly, it's the constant immersion and basically being 'steeped' in the narrative

When that's all you hear and its the only thing informing your worldview... that becomes your worldview.

I felt like this line in the article is relevant: "...But many white-collar workers, journalists included, struggle to understand the reach of talk radio because they don’t listen to it, and don’t know anyone who does."

Also, even places with sports on the radio dial, the sports coverage is often surrounded by conservative talk radio. I've heard it myself.... oh the college football game is on 890AM at 2:30pm....... and before and after the game it's just Rush's hate-spew.

I know it was mentioned in this thread, but poster 'certainnot' has it completely correct in my opinion. We do ourselves a major disservice by ignoring talk radio.

If I can't find music on the radio, I shut it off. There is a dead zone just North of Calwell, Ohio nearly to Canton, Ohio where I can't pick up anything but fundies or jerks. I don't have tech in the car, like Blue Tooth or satellite, but I have a cd player. As far as I'm concerned, the stations I don't listen to are air pollution.

the sowing of division and hatred between millions of everyday people. America was not that way before and I would submit we now have a dysfunctional nation on a path to fascism.

This is entirely the doing of a mostly hidden sector of right-wing high wealth individuals. They have a psychopathic hatred for anything that retards business expansion and revenue growth, including most everything our government has traditionally done for everyday people.

Everything else Republicans preach about is just populist fluff to gather votes from naive, vulnerable people.

The words conservative and conservatism have been completely adulterated until they're now meaningless.

20. per the article, JFK knew is was a problem in the early 1960s

Though one point the article makes is that people who are not part of this media ecosystem tend not to realized how pervasive it is.

This is a reminder to those who listen exclusively to NPR that the AM band exists, is filled with angry reactionaries, and envelopes a huge number of Americans in propaganda.

18. My mother used to listen to the "other side" - those same "early" conservative talk hosts

notably a few here in Philly who were basically "Libertarian" and who eventually openly called themselves that. One such character here was Irv Homer ("Evil Irving" ) -

Irv Homer
Broadcast Pioneers Luncheon
Wednesday, January 17, 2007

Broadcast Pioneers member Irv Homer began his talk show career hosting a telephone talk show at WXUR, later he became the top-rated area talk-show host of the Delaware Valley. Irv Homer was born on Thursday, May 29, 1924 in Philadelphia and grew up in the City of Brotherly Love. During the second world war, he served in the United States Air Force. Irv didn't plan to become the popular and controversial talk-show host he is today. He originally owned three bars in the Philadelphia area. He also spent a lot of time listening to and calling all the different talk-show hosts in the area and even described himself as a talk-show freak.

In the late 1960's, a neighbor of Irv's, Marvin Burak who had a successful talk show on WPEN in the fifties, purchased some time on WXUR for Marvin's "Radio Free Philadelphia" show. Marvin was on Thursdays and Fridays and talked station general manager John Norris into filling Monday through Wednesday with a new show called, "Right-Center-Left." These three days were not paid for, but ran as a public service. Burak took the Left, Jay Parker (later in the Reagan administration) took the right and Irv was the Center. It was Irv's job to listen to the view from the left and the view from the right and then throw both views out the window. The listeners loved it. Sometimes, the broadcasts originated live from Burak's home. Marvin thought Irv Homer would be perfect for talk radio because, "he had a big mouth and wasn't afraid to say what he thought, even if you didn't want to hear it."

Then, Irv went on to the station WEEZ in Chester. He had been calling the station so much to debate the moderators that the program director decided he liked Irv's style and called him to offer him a chance to go on the air. The audience loved him. Of course, the station hired Irv. In March of 1975 Irv was hired and became part of the family at WWDB. WWDB (96.5 FM) then known as "The Talk Station in Philadelphia".

[snip]

In 1972, Irv ran for Vice-President of the United States on the Libertarian Party's ticket. As Irv likes to say: "It boggles the mind." Irv Homer died on Wednesday evening, June 24, 2009. On Friday, Novmber 19, 2010, Irv Homer was posthumously inducted into the Broadcast Pioneers Hall of Fame.

I remember being home from work and listening - BY ACCIDENT - to Rush's very first show (in 1988 I believe), because I listened to 770 WABC in NY (which we could pick up down here) and normally listened to Lynn Samuels, who originally had that 12 - 3 spot and who was unceremoniously booted out and "moved down the hall" into another studio (IIRC her story about it), to be replaced by him in that slot (her show moved to a different time). Eventually he moved his operations down to Florida in his bunker.

and her show moved around and around and she was fired and brought back, over and over, and she eventually moved to the Sirius' "Left" channel. Later the channel became SiriusXM Left when the 2 companies merged (I originally had XM), and was finally renamed SiriusXM Progress.

By then, she had gone full birther before she died.

50. Yup

I had subscribed to XM radio back in 2007 - right around the time they were merging with Sirius. And both networks had some kind of "liberal talk" station and she was on the Sirius one (Sirius Left). When they merged and eventually combined the 2 (I think XM's was "Progress" ), that's when I discovered where she was and was like She could be irritating and annoying at times in the past but then she made some kind of decision to go all Orly Taitz.

I don't know if it is that someone was/is blackmailing them or what. But the sudden shift is often pretty dramatic.

That was awhile ago but he was broadcasting in the early 60's I know because I remember hearing his show as a kid waiting in the barber shop.

Which reminds me, the length of a male's hair also became a divisive issue starting in the mid 60's but I don't remember the amount of hatred displayed to the degree we are seeing today. Nobody formed armed militias plotting to kidnap the Beatles or Stones.

It's interesting when I look at family pictures how my Dad and other members of the family progressed and along with most media figures even grew their hair out much longer than one sees today.

One oldie but "goodie" who just died recently, was "The Reverend Les Kinsolving" -

Yet another was Tom Marr, who I see also recently died

and who at one point, was commuting back and forth here to Philly from Baltimore to do shows on both stations.

Of course the "father of modern conservative RW loon shock-jock talk radio", who you'll hear many like Alex Jones, attempt to copy - Bob Grant, famous for yelling "GET OFF MY PHONE you [fill in the blank invective]!!!!!".

These people were out there stoking the fires before the Rash Limpballs and Shit Hannitys and Glenn BecKKKs suddenly appeared in the mid-late '80s and early '90s.

Joe Pine was a hateful jerk who rallied against almost everything and never had a good word to say about anyone. How he became as listened to as he must have been to be broadcast nationwide is beyond me. I think maybe a lot of folks saw him as a characterture and his show some type of comedy act perhaps?

I used to listen to Bob Grant years ago as he bopped between WABC and WOR. He would get fired from one station for his potty mouth and then move to the other station, over and over, all during his insane career. Michael Gallagher ended up filling in for him a lot and eventually got his own show.

Bill Cunningham (on WLW in Cincinnati that I could actually pick up on the radio here at night when he was on), Neal Boortz (who was eventually syndicated), and of course Savage (Michael) Weiner - all of these people took it to the next level of "course talk".

that I have been listening to on and off since I was in junior high following their live broadcasts of the Nixon Watergate hearings in the afternoon when coming home from school.

Their program "Fresh Air" broadcasts from here with Terry Gross and I used to listen to Nina Totenberg too.

The problem is that at some point, they started to shift and go more conservative, as the loons started defunding them and pushing their programming and guests more and more to the right, as a way of interfering with their programming. It seemed to happen after Shrub got into office because I used to listen to NPR during the Gulf War and heard some excellent programming (and also got a shortwave radio to listen to a number of international broadcasts at the time).

You might want to try - Tune In app

there's ads on the Free version but you can get all manner of liberal and progressive radio and tv audio

Since I don't have cable etc I listen to the audio for Rachel, Lawrence, Joy, Chris.
Also Thom Hartman's radio. There's probably more people I'd want to check out at some point.

I also catch what I might miss from WNYC - AM/FM public radio.

from way back when they were first getting started and offered it. And I am shocked that they are still upholding that because so many entities like that "forget" and claim they are no longer "honoring" those "lifetime" subs.

And SiriusXM does broadcast the audio for MSNBC and CNN so I'll often be in bed and put them on (I am an early bird so it can be hard to try to stay up and watch Rachel or Lawrence or Brian Williams. I'll also listen to CSPAN Radio because they do have some politics-related programming on it and offer streaming of it via an app (plus it streams on SiriusXM on one of their streaming channels - it used to be part of their regular receiver lineup).

22. I Believe There's Requisite Condition They Omitted

Conservative policies have suppressed middle class earnings so the vision of the american dream have been killed by the Rs.
The talk radio thing became the smoke to hide that and find scapegoats.
If Rs hadn't killed upward mobility, conservative radio wouldn't have the audience.
It's the main reason why the Fairness Doctrine had to go.
Plans that upwardly funneled wealth needed to be hidden with other complaints about those other people.
It's symbiotic. They can't get away with those fiscal policies without hate radio, and hate radio doesn't exist on a grand scale without those fiscal policies.

26. Percentage of conservatives has been rising at snail's pace

33% in 1976 exit poll and 35% in 2016. Contrast to liberals moving from 16% to 26% over same time frame

No question the dangerous nutcase percentage of conservatives has soared, or at least become more brazen and able to communicate with each other

38. You can be unintentionally effected...

Here's my radio listening background and later on mini brainwashing story.

I've been a radio fan first for music, but then found later night Gene Sheppard a story spinner on ?WMCA-AM.
From there I found Barry Gray in mid '67 whom I listened to as he had people from JFK's admin who were trying to get, then supposing RFK's candidacy, and for a few months after the rest of the '68 Election. I also found WBAI-FM.

After about '69 I only listened to WBAI and FM Free form Rock+ then Alt/Indie Music Radio for decades.
But then cane Bill Clinton's presidency. Why?
Well there was very little liberal radio. I listened to Lynn Samuels (WABC-AM) and whether out of curiosity (as people began to buzz about him), or by accident - I started to listen to Limblarg. Why!?!

It was the equivalent of yelling at the TV. I'd be mentally yelling back at him. What can I say.

But then unfortunately after a few years one day he said something and I thought 'could he be right?' I stopped dead in my tracks (was walking w my Walkman) and the rest of me went 'Whaaa, NO! You know that's not true! You've never believed that. (Which was true)

Since then I've so far not been able to totally rid myself of that about 5% intermittent thinking. At least my upbringing, learning, and life experiences had/have corralled it at that level. I almost completely stopped listening to him, too. I work at getting rid of it.

Decades later neuralogical Science has found that repeatative phrases creates a nueral pathway that strengthens the more that phrase is used.

Luckily not to long after found NPR & ❤️ local programing WNYC. Also for the 2-3 years Air America ❤️Radio was on!

39. Fairness doctrine for public airwaves and extended to cable + internet

would also tamp down conspiracy theories, besides putting a real damper on one-sided radio and TV shows. BUT would it pass Constitutional muster, given the ultra-conservative Supreme Court that is about to commence. Could just hear them now-- violation of 1st Amendment.

43. Palm Beach county went from having all liberal and local radio hosts on WJNO, to Rush.

Rush and nothing but syndicated RW BS. Remember local radio show hosts? We had Randi Rhodes, Lee Fowler, Jack Kohl and somebody else until Rush showed up here one day after purchasing a house on The Island. They were all gone and canned RW BS took over the radio waves within a year or so.

Which is curious, because almost all local government and our Congress people have been Dem and liberal in spite of the wealthy's playground, Palm Beach being included in the mix and surprise ...more than a few of them are liberals too. Oh wait, excuse me ... with the notable exception of RW nutjob Alan West being elected as our Congresscritter for one term because Dems just didn't vote in significant numbers that year.

So there really isn't the market for RW BS in proportion to its prevalence here locally. Yet, there it is, wonder why?

56. This and also...

it can be (from my past listening) quite sexist and anti LGB (the TQI wasn't around yet when I was listening).

I remember Limblarg getting callers saying women should have the vote taken away from them bc they elected President Bill Clinton!

I had read The Handmaid's Tale 6 years earlier.
Listening to that kind of shit...

58. I have a super strict no talk radio policy in my car.

I won't listen to NPR or any AM stations in my car because I already have anger issues, talk radio would further piss me off. So it's basically music or nothing. I used to listen to the morning drive time LA guys here (Kevin & Bean) because they were at least funny and they never had any heated political discussion. But since they got canceled due to the shithead virus, all I listen to anymore is music or nothing.

64. The Times makes me shake my head now and then;

this is evident to anyone paying attention. It should print this article once a month until people get motivated to demand changes to the radio landscape........
