twice in less than twenty years, it has installed an incompetent clown, who was unwanted by most voters and who therefore decided to govern without compromise, making us the laughingstock of the world
We won't be able to rebuild our reputation until we scrap that archaic system

(17,001 posts)constitutional amendment is just short of a waste of time. When was the last time that happened? What are the odds the states that will lose a significant source of power are going to give that up?

(4,585 posts)A constitutional amendment is a long process and it's been accomplished 27 times in the past. Democrats and other liberals should establish a long-term goal to abolish the electoral college. The process begins by stating the goal and explaining to the public why it should be done. The last amendment was enacted in 1992.
Despite the electoral college and the absurd requirement of two senators for pieces of real estate, large states have much power in the House. That power can be used to help accomplish the goal. Low population states are not a majority of the states and some already would support an amendment. The process is long but Democrats and other liberals should join together and make a long-range plan to accomplish it. The important goal is to improve democracy in the USA and prevent disasters like GW Bush and Donald Trump.

It doesn't matter if they've got a disproportionate share of EC votes. If Democrats take Texas along with the usual states, then it's game over, and if republicans don't take Texas, then they can't win.
If other states want their voters to have any say in the election, then the best solution is to eliminate the EC.

(4,585 posts)The USA waged an unjustified war in Iraq under GW Bush and we have suffered the depradations of a corrupt and incompetent Trump regime.
A sustained campaign to eliminate the archaic, undemocratic and malignant electoral college must begin!
