Senate Democrats push for mandatory coronavirus testing, mask usage
Senate Democrats are pushing for mandatory mask usage in the Senate and establishing a coronavirus testing and tracing system after a recent outbreak infected three Senate Republicans.
In media appearances this week, Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-Ky.) defended the Senate's safety record. And most senators and staffers already wear masks in the Capitol and generally follow socially distancing guidelines. However those guidelines are not mandatory and some lawmakers and aides have walked around in recent weeks without masks.
Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-N.Y.) and Rules Committee ranking member Amy Klobuchar (D-Minn.) introduced a resolution Wednesday that would change that. Their proposal would ban senators from committees or the floor before negative tests, a newly salient issue after two Judiciary Committee Republicans tested positive ahead of Amy Coney Barrett's Supreme Court nomination hearing.
It would also require two negative tests for those returning to the Capitol, a 14-day quarantine for those exposed to coronavirus infections and a 10-day quarantine following a positive test that produces symptoms. And it would institute a mask mandate and require more testing and contact tracing.
