Because that's exactly what he did at the top of the helicopter steps, with his right hand, on his way from the WH to Walter Reed last Friday. I noticed and thought it was very strange, almost like OCD or a motor stereotypy you might see with frontal/subcortical involvement.

He does it when he’s almost completed his ascent or descent of stairs. I think it’s like his hop at the end of the ramp at West Point — once he’s pretty much home free, he acts like he’s been walking while just lightly or barely touching the rail.
