(6,477 posts)The reason the deaths are higher in New York and New Jersey is because the virus hit there first, went unchecked for weeks while we were trying to figure out what was going on, and, because it was early in a novel virus, we were simply trial and error on treatment. The death rate seems higher because only a small percentage of those who had the virus were actually tested in New York, where the number of those actually infected is likely to have been 10 times higher than the official number of positive tests.
The problem is actually the opposite: why was the virus so deadly in states like Florida and Texas that had 1) fair warning that it was coming, 2) at least some paths to mitigation established through the slaughter in New York and New Jersey, 3) better treatment and an adjusted supply chain for PPE and other virus-fighting equipment.
What Cruz sees as a failure of NY and NJ is actually a failure of FL, TX, and, to be fair, CA.

(3,012 posts)on an important line of fact as to cities with the most international flights, which was something I was thinking while watching Cruz do the "look something shiny" debate trick with Cuomo. His list should've been more refined. Orlando, Miami and Vegas are in the top 10 but the international destinations are whats important. Orlando and Miami fly more Caribbean and South American flights. Vegas, Mexico and Canada. The states with the most direct non-stop flights to and from Europe and Asia in no order are NY/NJ/MA/DC, WA, CA, IL and MI (yes its almost as close to fly to China/Japan/Korea from O'Hare/Detroit as it is from San Fran/Seattle). A direct flight from Houston to Hong Kong would be twice the distance as one from Detroit. If you look at it from that perspective, early on in this Pandemic those were the hardest hit states. The economy of flight travel played the biggest role in the spread in the US as opposed to red or blue. Cruz got beat up by Capt. Bleachheart on the Rep. playground and grew a beard instead of balls and has become the Lindsey Grahmcracker of TX.
