I think he needs to do something to make sure this disaster doesn't happen again.
I don't have a clue what that would be, but I'm sure there are enough legal minds in this nation that could come up with a solution.

(47,509 posts)If we have the Senate, we need to get rid of the filibuster so we can do good things for the millions of people who are hurting. A New New Deal. That would make him and the Dems super popular.
I'm trying to think how CA managed to put the Republican Party completely out of power. We weren't the first state to do that. I think Washington was ahead of us. I think the voters did that, though. But that's what needs to be done. Allow them no decision making power at all until they turn back into Einsenhower/Rockefeller Republicans.

(71,025 posts)The link has an interesting history of California in terms of voting...Pete Wilson lost California with prop 187
"Californias Latino and Asian populations boomed in the 1990s and the growing segment of voters were turned off by the Republican Partys hard-line stance on immigration. After the party closely tied itself to Proposition 187, a controversial California ballot measure that denied public services to people in the country illegally, Republicans struggled to win back the state's immigrant population. Democratic candidates have won decisively in every election since 1992 by performing well in the most populous areas. Despite failing to win the presidency, Hillary Clinton won a higher percentage of votes than any candidate since Franklin D. Roosevelt."

Statistical
(19,264 posts)If Biden wins AND the Senate is flipped AND the cloture rule is removed AND Democrats are willing to be bold
then could pass sweeping legislation restricting the power of the Presidency. The constitution leaves the Presidency rather vaguely defined so without legislative restriction the President has a lot of "wiggle room" which Trump has used for catastrophic effect.
At the same time opening DC & PR to statehood, expanding the Supreme Court, and implementing the Wyoming rule would reduce (reduce not eliminate) the conservative bias in government which would make it more difficult for the Republicans to regain the trifecta again without moderating themselves.
Now will the Democrats be so bold. I don't know. I certainly hope so but there will be pressure to moderate themselves and seek reconciliation and all that nonsense we hear every time the voters given the Democrats a mandate.

Statistical
(19,264 posts)If we try to reign in the Presidency and the Supreme Court overturns it that isn't any worse than just throwing up our hands and doing nothing. Both Roberts and Gorsuch have on a case by case basis put ideology on the back burner and sided with the liberal wing of the court.

(71,025 posts)pandemic. We need to find out what we can do...we know we can expand the courts so that could be first so we can save the ACA if need be...healthcare, Medicare etc. In two years we need to have done enough that we keep the house and the Senate.

(884 posts)I've posted about this before, but I'll keep screaming it from the rooftops until it's no longer needed.
What you're talking about here is nothing less than sacrificing rule of law in the interest of preserving mutual toleration, but mutual toleration is ALREADY DEAD.
Short and to the point, that's the pressure we need to apply.
We MUST not moderate in the interest of toleration that WILL NOT be mutual, no matter HOW much we moderate.
And not only must we not neglect to make the needed legislative changes, we must not neglect to prosecute the crimes.
We did that with Nixon and Watergate. They still demonized Carter.
We did that with Reagan and Iran-Contra. They still demonized Clinton.
We did that with Bush 43 and fabricated intelligence. They still demonized Obama.
Three of the last four Republican presidents have escaped accountability for their crimes, and the crimes just keep getting worse.
It's an appealing concept, but it quite simply CANNOT work in the reality in which we actually live.
