Are the folks at Politico delusional...?
I don't want to link to the article because I don't want to give it any more exposure, but they have a piece up suggesting that Trump is now "riding high" after RBG's death, and that the naming of a new Justice will be just what he needs to bring back a whole bevy of anti-abortion voters into his camp, "flipping the script" and possibly allowing him to pull off a come-from-behind victory in November (although they grant he has a tendency to "blow it" when put in a strong position).
My initial question: what strong position??? It seems to me that the notion that there is a yuge hidden army of right-to-lifers out there who aren't already firmly in his camp, and haven't been there since 2016, seems utterly fanciful at best. And, considering that the one poll that has come out so far shows respondents opposed to Trump being able to fill the vacancy by a 51%-42% margin, I utterly fail to see how it's going to net him a large share of voters who wouldn't have backed him until now -- in fact, it would seem to be more likely to hurt him with voters than help him. Am I missing something here? ![]()

2. You're right on.
His dismal approval rating is not going to budge and hasn’t for the last year. Maybe even the last 4 years.
Well actually it’s gone down. |

4. I agree with Politico unfortunately
All news is good news when it comes to Trump
The loss of RBG, puts him back in the spotlight. The general public won't know too much about the nominee. If it's a woman, they will think, "How nice". It distracts voters from all the other shitty stuff that he's doing. All of sudden Covid isn't front page news anymore. ___________________ Last night, I was sitting in my car at Sonic, texting my friends. I suddenly got an alert on my phone, but I didn't get a text pop-up. Wishfully, I was hoping that Trump had died. I asked my friends and they told me it was just another Amber Alert..sigh... Why can't he die?????????????? |

7. Covid was pushed off the front page for a few days, but it isn't staying off.
People continue to die by the thousands. Schools are going back with no safeguards or testing plans, so infections will skyrocket, made worse by the flu season.

5. Agree. If anything RBG's death will move the left
in ways that Biden himself could not. Trump already moves the right.
The MSM is operating under the conventional wisdom that 'the Right votes on supreme court, Left does not'. This may be true in a generic sense but not when a liberal icon like RBG and her legacy is essentially 'on the ballot'. There is deep sadness and anger in the air, which will motivate the left and anti-Trump voters in general (women, moderates, etc). |

13. Anyone would think there wasn't a vacancy in 2016
the religious nut jobs will vote for Trump anyway, because they all think he’s the greatest god to ever do godly things. The support he’s lost and Biden has gained isn’t coming from that demographic.

6. Right-wingers who were going to sit out the election
are less likely to do so now. The court is everything to the right.
It just occurred to me that this is a reason for Trump not to put through a nominee until after the election. This is the DU member formerly known as BainsBane.

This won't bring the Never Trumpers back into the GOP fold.
Look what Lincoln Project Never Trumpers just put out: Link to tweet |

11. I think getting a new judge on the bench will invigorate right-wingers
We're so fucked......
Unless Trump nominates a real turd like Barr or Dick Cheney etc. He's gonna nominate a woman, and these women are not highly known. Additionally they can't use the same kind of questioning like they did the Kavanaugh. |

14. Media outlets desperately want horseraces too close to call
That's what sells eyeballs.
Further, the right wing gets angry at articles that point out that facts don't line up with what they want, while Democrats are obsessive hand wringers. So of course they know the way to make money is to post this kind of stuff. Don't put any credence in it. |

I stopped reading Politico articles about 6(?) months ago. They seemed to have a shift in their reporting from informational to opinion/sensational. Did they have a change in ownership?

I certainly thought Trump was done back in 2016, never would have thought he would be able to get even 40% of the vote after everything that had come out about him.

20. Politico is a mouthpiece of the one percent...they will always find a conservative angle
Some people here often like to spread their spin on things...both siderism, normalizaton, etc. The same sort of people that believe Susan Collins when she says she is concerned, or the New York times Editorial department when they say anything at all.
