Think the press is doing a good job?

So ... do you think the news does a good job of covering important stories? Or at least attempts to?

Want to get outraged over which news the MSM chooses to cover?

Here's some important numbers that might be of interest (sorry I don't have any disaster videos to attach):

So far there have been about 850,000 total deaths world-wide due to the coronavirus.
Just yesterday there were about 4,200 dead world wide.

Awful. Really terrible right? I agree. Governments should be falling from their mismanagement of this crisis.

But now notice this under-reported news:

There are about 9 million deaths a year from hunger and hunger-related diseases.

That's about 25,000 a day.

Every day.

Funny how we don't even really hear about it. Maybe a story once in a great while, but easily forgotten among the 24x7 torrent of useless trivia that is considered news today. Never focused or loud enough for us to comprehend and grasp the magnitude and the sheer horror that is ... not news.

Our so-called civilization leaves a lot to be desired.

1. You are so right.

Since I stopped watching cable news some years ago, I watch a lot more international news. It is eye-opening, the misery that is going on around the world, and people care so little, it isn't even reported. Yet cables news spends hours and hours every day on stupid political bickering.

4. It's such a waste ...

They could be doing such a service, but the bottom line are ratings and the people in news that care are fewer and fewer every year.

15. BBC regularly has stories that would never make it on American evening news.

U.S. news programs take an awful lot of time covering the weather.

2. The MSM is fucking WORTHLESS.

I'm watching CNN right now. Some blond woman is interviewing Senator Ron Johnson from Wisconsin. As usual, she's allowing him to score point after point by talking over her and not answer questions. I don't feel that there is anywhere NEAR the time given to Dems that is given freely to repigs . . . And not only that, we have WORTHLESS journalists as a "defense". . . .

6. "journalists"

I might argue that they shouldn't be called journalists. The effort to seriously report the news has been long abandoned in favor of chasing the ratings. Otherwise you wouldn't have so many reporters afraid of losing "access" and not doing followup questions. And people watching news think that they're being informed. Sigh.

7. I used to watch Rachel Maddow every night ...

I would try and get through some tv news every day ... but recently it's been much too depressing. I can get my news on the net much faster, but .. I worry about the "common sense" view of the world that is so far removed from reality.

9. thank you

That's a great quote from Ike in your signature. My middle name is Dwight (after him). I'm still kinda stunned that my parents did that ... they're way more right-wing than he was.

8. No. It's been crap for a couple of decades.

The same decades in which conservatives took over the Republican party and bashed the media for "liberal bias".

Hint, guys: "Liberal bias" is "failure to cheerlead their agenda." Anything they don't like is "extreme liberal" or "socialist" or "marxist", etc. The only way they won't yell about how biased you are is if you're repeating their own views and shouting down anybody who disagrees.

10. US news has always been biased....

But yeah, ever since the Fairness Doctrine was abandoned (and then amplified by no-rules cable) ... it's been awful.

What's stunning is how many people believe they're getting the news, when they are just getting manipulated. We're a country of no-attention-span sheep.

11. This is a good read.

I tune in for a few minutes here and there each day... but I never watch a whole show on msnbc or cnn. The MSM is worthless over all. They sold HRC down the river in 2016 and they’ll do it to Joe Biden too. I’m not at all interested in their sham.

12. Horse race

I'm convinced they are much more interested in a tight race (thus higher ratings) than promoting any particular candidate or point-of-view. Heaven for MSM would be a tight race whose outcome is seriously in doubt.

They will naturally attack the front runner just to drive up ratings!

But I'm with you. I can't stand to watch the news for more than a few minutes at a time. Even less if they start quoting idiots.

16. Turing it off is also good for your psyche

I think things like cable news are not good for our society - they promote tribalism like nothing else. They want to make you outraged, not for good of society, but for the good of their ratings. I don't think they are evil, they are just not good for us. Like potato chips, which are SO GOOD, but not good for your body.

I do occasionally watch the evening network news (at 6:30 PM in the east). While they are not great for world news coverage, they tend to be a little more to the point.
