Now here's my hypothesis -
In one of the clips from the tape, Maryanne tells Mary that the Con didn't sit his SATs and she knows the name of the person who sat them. If I heard right I think she said he told her. Now there are things we have told siblings and we remember them.
The Con knows that Maryanne told Mary about that hence she was told not to attend the funeral. Indeed he may have moved the funeral to keep them out. And literally two days later, voila, the tapes.
