In the mid-1960s I was a medic in a hospital in the south. We had our own chow hall. So this one lunch we had leftover chicken wings and drummies and pieces. LARGE cookie sheets full of help yourself chicken with fixings. After eating two of us went out the back door to get some fresh air. As we were sitting on the wall a cook came out of the kitchen door with one of these large sheets of leftover leftovers getting ready to throw in a dumpster.

Just across the lawn was the outer chainlink fence. On the other side a large daycare center with probably lots of military family kids. So I said to the cook let me take that chicken and give it to the kids. Don't toss it. He handed it over. I walked it over to the fence as slid it under. Within seconds the sheet was empty as the kids came running. I took the sheet back and handed it to the cook who was taking a smoke break.

Later that day I got called to the First Sgt office where I got my posterior chewed. Forgiving away government property without prior authorization. I was told I could be court marshaled for that illegal action.

So back then I couldn't give the leftover chicken to hungry kids. That was clearly head to the dumpster.

Today I guess you can destroy USPS taxpayer-funded equipment worth millions without a peep.

Every day, each facility "cleared the floor", meaning all mail that arrived got distributed. Bulk Mail, ballots, packages, everything.

DeJoy decreed that only "priority" mail be prepped and distributed first, and IF there was time (no OT, remember), then they could go prep the rest for delivery the next day. Few Mail Carriers have time to do that.

So essentially, this was why everything was piling up.

I wish I understood this better; my mailman was using a lot of inside-the-USPS terminology.
