L'Oreal requiring doctor's note for U.S. employees to work from home

https://www.cbsnews.com/news/loreal-work-from-home-doctors-note/

"Because I'm worth it" is not an acceptable reason to work from home during the coronavirus pandemic, even if L'Oréal is your employer.

Forget the famous tagline, because the U.S. arm of the international beauty brand is insisting that its 12,000 employees start "gradually" returning to the company's worksites, despite the ongoing threat of COVID-19. Only those employees with a documented underlying medical condition that puts them at greater risk of contracting COVID-19, or developing a complication, may apply for a work-from-home extension, the company confirmed to CBS MoneyWatch.

An employee's word isn't sufficient. Anyone seeking a medical exemption from returning to in-office work is required to provide proof of their condition, such as a doctor's note.

"With health and safety as our highest priority, L'Oréal USA has proactively provided extended work-from-home accommodations to employees who have a medical condition that may make them more vulnerable to a COVID-19 related infection or complication according to guidance from the Centers for Disease Control," the company said in a statement to CBS MoneyWatch.

My former employer never shut down, receiving bogus "essential work" status because they MIGHT get orders for product later turned (by other companies) into adhesive medical bandages. Those orders happened about once every two years.

I had to quit. No UI benefits.

Edit: Oh, but management was allowed to work from home.

We had a solvent glue explosion that could've easily killed people, but incredibly nobody was hit by fast-moving debris or within the areas engulfed in flames. A sensor that would've detected the dangerous vapor build-up had been turned off because previous alarms had slowed down production.

Management lied to the arriving fire department, and then we had a meeting in which management basically threatened any employee who talked about it.

So good riddance to those assholes.

... is that almost all of the employees go along with management, like anyone who reports those types of incidents to OSHA is their enemy too.

In their minds, it could cause a company shut-down and a loss of their paychecks. They just accept the system in place, so their main fight is whatever helps them and their families to survive in that system. There's not enough economic security for most of them to fight the system.

I'm not too surprised by some of the people who protested government shut-downs that caused loss of income. I've worked with many people like that.

I'm sure that many serfs under feudalism viewed their way of life like immutable laws of nature too, and they'd fight others trying to change it despite promised improvements for them.

whatever. Their employees are definitely Not "worth it" by their actions.

How about a "simple" precaution? No, Not gonna fly according to "..because you're worth it" L'Oreal

"Simple fear of contracting COVID-19 is not a basis to refuse to return to work," Rella added.

So this shouldn't be hard for someone that wants it. The question is whether employees will want to stick around.

Fear & anxiety are real mental health conditions that negatively affect physical health.
A doctor could write that note in good conscience.
