Russia announces they will move missiles and troops to western borders. This is the same exact thing that happened when Trump announced the troop pullout out of Germany last month

Huh! So Russia is sending more troops to challenge NATO/US near the borders, Trump announces that he is planning the withdrawal of troops from Germany, and Putin this week signed a decree giving him more flexibility in using nuclear weapons. Nothing to see

Note Trump had a phone call with Putin on June 1 days before his announcement. This time Trump had a call w Putin a few days before beginning the pullout

3. As Dumb As It Is To Remove These Troops..

it would be even dumber for Russia to try this. Barring a nuclear exchange, Russia would get trounced by the full EU. It might even cease to exist in its current form.

5. Some of these moves are part of the dynamic force employment initiative

Dynamic Force Employment: A Vital Tool in Winning Strategic Global Competitions

Trump is trying to repackage some of these changes which probably would have happened anyway into his damaging transactional approach to negotiations with allies, Germany in particular. Offering a "trip wire" strategy in Poland, or Latvia reminds me of the "phony war" in Poland early in WWII. I don't think anything more than a token force, and a mobile one that deploys periodically rather than permanently should ever be stationed on Russia's border. It's contrary really to the DFE intent. This OP seems somewhat inconsistent with the announcement of movement of some of these forces to Belgium.

Similar considerations went into the withdrawal of US forces from near the DMZ in South Korea and their withdrawal to Pyongtaek. Beyond this an actual removal of additional troops from South Korea is viewed dimly in defense circles, but the Trump administration kept implying it was under consideration while Congress implemented measures to block it.

8. The withdrawal of US troops from Germany may take so long it can be reversed when Biden wins the

election. Then Biden can start repairing ties with Europe and other allies all over the world the Trump has alienated.

10. The Post reported this morning that it will take "years" to complete the withdrawal.

Spurred on by President Donald Trumpís demand to pull troops out of Germany, the U.S. will bring about 6,400 forces home and shift about 5,600 to other countries in Europe, U.S. defense leaders said Wednesday, detailing a Pentagon plan that will cost billions of dollars and take years to complete.

The future of the plan is uncertain, at best, since it relies on support and funding from Congress, and a number of members have voiced opposition. And it may not survive at all if Trump isnít re-elected.

Lawmakers have condemned the troop cuts as a gift to Russia fueled by Trumpís spite at Germany.
