1. Listening to Trump talk, ignore that corrupt idiot.
2. Putting catchup on a hotdog. On all fairness that should warrant 10 lashes on the ass. USE MUSTARD, the only true compliment to hotdogs.

(71,491 posts)I admit I break a Chicago dog rule by leaving off the relish. Not a fan of sweet relish.
But, mustard, onion, tomato, pickle & sport peppers.

(3,544 posts)Maybe here its meant as a joke, but Ive known people who are passionate about it, and very serious. And the rules are usually the same...you cant put ketchup on a hot dog, but you must put it on your fries. You cant put pineapple on a pizza. Burritos should never contain rice. Some people seem to feel a need to control other peoples food. I just think its weird.
Blue_true
(31,261 posts)But I can certainly tell you one thing, if I am caught eating a pizza with pineapple on it, then I most likely would have been denied any food or other nourishment for a long time and would be famished enough to eat a pizza that has pineapple on it, cause if there is one thing I dislike more than catchup on a hot dog, is pineapple on pizza.

I don't get people who feel the only way is their way. I eat whatever I eat how I like it. I don't expect anyone else to eat it the same way I do, because most of the time, they don't and don't even want to try it.

(43,717 posts)...is by far the most perplexing.
Hot dogs are naturally salty; ketchup is naturally sweet. The concept of mixing sweet with salty has long been a desirable one. What else would explain the popularity of Reeses Cups, and who doesnt love them?
Dont get me wrong; mustard is a fine condiment as well. But mustard alone on a hot dog is not very appealing to me. Youre just add additional spice to salt, without any sort of sweet offset to it.
People who insist that ketchup cant be put on hotdogs fall into the same category as people who insist that iced tea must be drunk unsweetened. And lets be honest, unsweetened ice tea has a more proper name: dirty pond water.
So yes, I will enjoy my hot dog.
With ketchup.

I have adapted his recipe for this quick dinner."...

I have since been to England and Ireland a few times and found that malt vinegar with chips is the norm there. They have the best Fish and Chips and the malt vinegar is the perfect complement. I can never eat chips with ketchup again.
I am one of those oddballs that doesn't really like ketchup, so I always appreciate having a good vinegar around.

(6,843 posts)Try mortadella that's been imported for a treat. Love the real stuff.
Blue_true
(31,261 posts)You seem to understand things about the prep of Italian food that most people, even of Italian ancestry dont. That being said, bologna is an approximation of mortadella that works with the homogenized American tastebuds, Mortadella comes off as too fatty for a lot of people, bologna successfully hides the fat in basically super ground-up meat.
A lot of food that we eat as cultural food is a watered down version of what one would encounter if a person eat in the country of origin of that food. The watering down make it more marketable. For example, I really like spaghetti, but I have a real hard time with spaghetti that is made in Italy, the texture and after taste just doesnt work for me, I am so used to the Americanized version. Our food is a mixture of many cultural foods, but in pretty much every case, a dish loses the pure authenticity of the country cultures that influenced it.
Drahthaardogs
(6,843 posts)Poor execution. Mortadella, prosciutto, bresoala...all of them are sliced paper thin - they are INTENSE. Average slice of bologna is about 1/16 of an inch and people slap a couple of slices.
Mortadella is a force meat, ground very fine and very cold. Only good cuts of pork are used. A bit of tripe is added for binding. The fat is the stuff as lardo and is blanched first. It is slightly unctuous and delicious. Peppercorn and pistachio add a bit of the exotic when you bite into a piece. The other seasoning that is a major player is mace, almost nutmeg but not quite.
Bologna on the other hand is emulsified. Meat and fat are whipped into a suspension. Corn syrup and powdered milk are added to help. Beef Heart and other inferior cuts are often added.
I consider it junkie food. I haven't eaten it in over 40 years.
