So here's the basic problem with opening schools:

we fund our local schools through property taxes. The tax levy, which would reflect pre-Covid 19 conditions, has already been made. States and local governments cannot spend money they do not have...unlike the federal government. So we simply do not have the money to make the accommodations we need to make in time for the schools to open in the fall. All the bullying in the world is not going to change that.

1. And in my town the voters just threw out a "normal" budget increase...

with not much more than inflationary additions.

Imagine if they got hit with COVID costs.

2. The coup.

It's obvious to me that Chump and the republican/fascists are going to use the plague as cover to do some pretty shady stuff, and killing off the public school system has long been on their agenda.

3. The problem is even more basic .

How do you keep 5 6 7 8 year old children from each other? They hug. They stand together. They bump each other. All without thinking about it. They use each other's stuff. A teacher would need one helper for each child. With all the money talk the human nature is being ignored.

6. My granddaughter is 6 and there is no possible way

she could possibly control herself to socially distance amongst her friends. Thank God my DIL realizes this is the case and is not sending her back and will homeschool her no matter what she has to do.
She spent 3 hours arguing with the school yesterday, due to the school losing funding for those that aren't using their specific homeschooling program.(she is worried they will try to cancel that specific program, so she declined)

8. 10 year olds

My granddaughter is 10. Her dance school had a summer class outside. Cool outside social distancing. They fell on each other as soon as they arrived. Surrounded the teacher. All with love and happiness. No masks. Only a dozen or so multiply by kids in the classroom. Dont get me started on the boys. Wrestling and playing. No school yet if I had kids.

4. That and ...

Perhaps only half of the teachers will show (They donít want to die.), and, perhaps only half of the students will show (Their parents donít want to die, nor do they want their children to die.)

This is a BIG MESS, and I have no solution, but itís silly to think that Federal bullying is going to make schools reopen. Not universally, anyway.

5. . . . . It will kill public education even as it kills off the poor using kids to spread virus

It's brilliant in it's evil way and not surprising from this monster.

7. Feds should subsidize schools, not corporations.

Even if we don't re-open schools this fall, most districts around the nation were already short of funds and need funding to prepare for a solid re-opening down the road.

In addition, there will be extra expenses for all schools for a long time for disease prevention supplies and increased labor costs due to teachers falling ill and the need for extra school nursing staff.

Our schools have always squeaked by on whatever they're given in a budget but there is a limit.

10. Just talked to guy on local School Board. Covid is overblown, he's not worried about it.
