A likely culprit in Covid-19 surges: People hell-bent on ignoring social distancing orders

There is a reason why the areas of spread are tied to places like bars, rather than to protests.

Adding fuel to this fire, officials say, are the multitudes of young people determined to socialize. Some have tried to pin the problem on the Black Lives Matter protests that have continued for weeks, but preliminary research using geolocation data suggests these events had no impact on the virus’s spread. Instead, public health experts are attributing the surge in new cases to the mask-free masses flocking to reopened restaurants and bars, pool parties and lazy rivers.

“They’re conducting themselves like it’s pre-Covid, and that’s not going to work anymore,” Bruce Dart, director of the Tulsa Health Department, told the Washington Post. Younger people, he said, are “not social distancing, not wearing masks or paying attention to hand-washing.” In one stunning case shortly after Memorial Day, a group of 16 friends all tested positive for the virus after visiting a newly reopened bar in Florida.

In the months since worldwide lockdowns were adopted, there’s been a recurring theme among coronavirus rebels: They do what they want. In the early weeks of the pandemic, people swarmed beaches around the world, from Florida to Bondi Beach in Australia. “If I get corona, I get corona,” one spring breaker told Reuters. “At the end of the day, I’m not gonna let it stop me from partying.” (He later apologized, calling his comment “insensitive.”)

Even after quarantines had been instituted, Washington, DC, Metro officials in March had to practically beg riders not to visit the city’s famous cherry blossoms, which they did anyway, in droves. Brits took to crowded pubs to chant “f*** coronavirus!” And one woman went viral when she tweeted about her defiant trip to a crowded Red Robin restaurant. “It was delicious,” she tweeted, “and I took my sweet time eating my meal. Because this is America. And I’ll do what I want.”

We wear masks everywhere and have sanitizer in our car and hotel room. No cleaning service each day unless you let them know by 9 am, and then you have to be out of the room for at least 3 hours before they’ll come in and clean. We get take out, delivery or cook in the room.

Dh and I went for a drive this afternoon. Our kids are doing some outdoor activities so we had time to drive around. We headed to a spot we knew about- gravel road along a river. We found a spot nearly at the end of the road where we could hang out and let our pooch play in the river.

But like every other spot along the river was jammed with folks. Folks floating the river, grouped together in large packs of people. Looked like a fun thing to do, except... pandemic.

We won’t get take out if the workers aren’t masked. We just walk out. Lots of people on the street walking around, well more than half the folks masked. I’ve been tracking the local cases, and it’s about 6 or so a day in this county, mostly in the 20-29 age bracket. Pretty low incidence across the state and few deaths.

We will be socially isolating when we get home. It’s not like we are hanging out with strangers each day, but still. Two weeks of not seeing folks once we get back and then we may see family again. Our state has many more cases and many more deaths than the state we are vacationing in.

The shocking thing was driving through another state to get here. Very red neck state, totally red. Stopped to get gas, and no one had a mask on. Very busy service station. Zero masks. We didn’t go in. So weird to see folks without masks going about their daily business as if nothing was wrong.

I don’t mind the judgment at all!

I’m comfy with our decision. I wouldn’t visit most places in the world right now - like pretty much everywhere. But I had absolutely zero trepidation traveling here. To me, the risk is smaller than going to my local Costco or to my office.

But I also realize that many folks wouldn’t be comfy doing this, and I’m not seeking to defend my decision, just acknowledging that yes there is a risk in what we are doing and no one should do anything they feel is too risky. I’m not encouraging folks to take vacations. (And this one is lame on the vacation front but it’s what we are calling it)

I do get out for my long walks, mask ready to use if someone gets near me.

Maybe get out of dodge in October or November if safe to do so. Not going to any festivals or conventions. I mask up at my nail salon, hair salon, to the grocery store.I carry hand sanitizer with me, gloves too. I watch surroundings a d other people. No COVID so far. No invites from family either.

seems a little bit of a stretch to me. I saw tons of maskless people and lord knows they weren't distancing. I think the spike from people going out to eat and such will hit in a week or two. So we have *another* spike to look forward to.

The article explains that the right wing talking point blaming BLM protests for the surge does not hold water compared to the activities actually associated with reopening. Most protests are outside and most BLM protest attendees are wearing masks and there is some effort at social distancing. It is not risk free, but as an activity, it is just in the middle of risks.

What is more risky? Going shopping, going to church, going to a restaurant or worse a crowded bar without a mask. Not surprisingly, a lot of hot spots are associated with the reopening of bars, which is why even Republican pro-Trump Governors like DeSantis have shut down bars.
