My covid rash no longer looks like I could lose my arm.

Warning. The following is pretty gross. Covid is not kind.

The itching still makes me worried that I might scratch myself down to the bones, but the skin is no longer the weak layers of odd flaky flesh like really old plastic with dark blood and constantly leaking lymph just below the surface.
It takes days to get over and I have feared I would get a secondary infection. The constant eruption of white heads and the shedding of sharp little crystalline grains of lymph has nearly gone. Keeping a thin layer of petroleum jelly on it has really helped. I still have other areas and they always threaten to spread, but the worst of it is over. It seems to take about ten days to go from horror to manageable.

Be careful out there my friends. I thought I had recovered a month ago, my cough was gone and the lack of energy was mostly gone. Then I got this. I known this is gross. But be warned. I will not describe the bowel issues. Again my friends. Be careful.

The cream helped a lot with skin qualities. I worry about the long term effect of cortisone but I gave in after I got worried about the long term effect of loosing and arm and being exposed to the hospital staff. By staff I mean staff infections and the like.

Petroleum jelly did as much as the cortisone. It did not moisturize the skin as well, but it did keep the skin from losing moisture and with all the lymph involved, moisture was not a problem after evaporation was reduced. I would have the cortisone handy though to help weather the worst of the itching. Treatment of this condition is walking a thin line.

Diphenhydramine HCL (Benadryl but cheap version) has helped and helped me sleep, but I did manage to worsen the injury by scratching in my sleep.

On top of the quality protein is the use of vitamin C when protein is consumed. Preferably from a food source but pills may do. It takes a molecule of vitamin C to use a molecule of collagen for repair and when taking care of skin, especially when you are older, collagen is useful. Without vitamin C collagen is going to be used as a fat so potato or citrus are important when consuming protein.

between the antibiotic effect of sun and the most usable source of vitamin D, sun also makes me sweat and hopefully having my pores clean will keep the odd waste out of my skin and prevent my immune system from deciding that a new area is a war zone.

I try to spare others from hearing of my personal pain, but I realized that there was not a lot of discussion about this.
The real fear while going through this is the horrid story of blood clots pretty much stopping circulation and causing you to lose arms, legs or die. I tried to keep hydrated, my wife cooked lots of onions and garlic and I took aspirin the moment I even imagined I might have a headache.

We have no idea if the onions and garlic will actually protect you from covid blood clots, but then again any excuse to eat more onions and garlic is a good excuse to eat onions and garlic.

Keep paper towels handy. Lots of them. Small containers of petroleum jelly. Vitamin c, at least half of it in a food matrix and not as a supplement. Cortisone creme and an antihistamine.

I use BC powder for aspirin. By putting the powder under your tongue for a minute before washing it down it can stop a headache in a fraction of the time. You have to be a big boy to handle the powdered aspirin under your tongue. I think the powder and water is less likely to cause a GI bleed out so I prefer it.

Easy to fix nutritive food. Eggs. Xylitol added to a drinkable alcohol will make a cough syrup that is less likely to rot out your teeth. You don't want to have to visit a dentist during this. Take extra care of your teeth. Floss, lots of floss.

Since rubbing alcohol is scarce, everclear is the expensive substitute and hydrogen peroxide is a good thing to keep handy. By everclear, I mean the cheapest equivalent at your discount source for booze.

Xylitol can also be used as a detergent to clean some pathogens, look it up. A lot of survival diets can cause issues. I keep spicy vegetable juice (HEB V8 equivalent) in order to restore electrolytes and prevent some of those issues.

To purge, there is nothing like radish greens blanched with balsamic, wine or rice vinegar, butter and salt. with a bit of garlic cooked with the radish is a delightful way to ease things along and clear things out.

I use a product for brewing called Star San to treat produce like lettuce or cabbage just in case. Catching covid from food may not be an issue but there are other issues produce has had and you don't want to have any health issues during a plague.

As best you can cook from home. Grits with soft boiled eggs, butter and crazy mixed up salt is a delight. I mix it all together.

Grow sprouts. This is the best advice of all. Sprouts. Lots of sprouts. Grow your own.

On your last sentence about sprouts — I haven’t grown alfalfa sprouts in a good long while, and just when I started thinking about trying them again, I read that the seeds can be contaminated, like so much of our food supply these days. It didn’t occur to me to google for reliable sources (or just ask my fellow DUers in one of the sustainability forums). Note to Self: do that.

Thank you for sharing your experience.

They really REALLY need to be rinsed frequently with clean water. It is very easy to create a micro-environment for fungus and bacteria when making sprouts... i lived in a community where a number of people got sick. We were using wellwater and the rinse schedule was for 2x a day... not enough! After the water was tested there was a very small amount of pathogens that otherwise wouldn't have needed treatment, but for the fact that they reproduce quite well on sprouts (apparently alfalfa especially).

We will examine the contents of the formula and try to reproduce it from food products made as close to scratch as possible. When we can, that is how we roll!

Yea, we ain't taking the gross picture. In various stages it has resembled nearly all the pictures we have found with searches. The pictures may look different, but they are all stages. Some can come and go quickly some are pretty nasty.

If people could see and understand what could be in store for them if they continue to ignore this illness, most would be more serious about avoiding it.

Back in the 1960s, TV news showed what was happening. I have a childhood memory of seeing a Buddhist monk set himself on fire to protest the Vietnam War. At the time, I didn't fully understand so I was just confused. Now I'm not confused, just a little wiser.

Just a little.

Did you have pneumonia? I had a chest X-ray that confirmed pneumonia. Fortunately, my doctor let me go home rather than be admitted to the hospital. I stayed in bed for a full 2 weeks. I knew when I woke up one morning that I was getting better. And I have improved daily since.

I'm not sure I want to know more about what you've gone through. It is so frightening. I just want this to be over.

We think we caught it while in the checkout line of a large grocery store in Houston where we were obtaining harder to get ingredients.

We never quite reached the stage of pneumonia but we were scared that we were both on the edge of it. Extreme tiredness, slight fever, dry cough with lots of expectoration. March was a blur and only parts of April where human. At then end of June we both started to show new symptoms. Covid is scary and we have no idea how it ends. We probably first heard about it in January. I am still waiting to develop bat powers.

I hope both of you are over it.. it would be so scary. I'm glad you got to go home, too!

Do you know where you could have gotten it from?

My sister & best friend passed away in a San Diego Rehab center the day after Christmas.. suddenly and shockingly from pneumonia.. she went in because of a fractured hip..

Now we're wondering if it could have been something to do with the CV. there wasn't an autopsy. I know her immune system must have been compromised too.. having to be in bed for so long. We talked about when was she going to get the hell out of there.

After I got home from the memorial in LA I was sick for 3 weeks with a cough & weakness and thought at one point I could die.. we knew nothing about the CV at that point. it was in early January. I attributed it to the shock & grief and running myself ragged.. and the plane ride on top of that.

I'm just now being able to talk about it.

Jul 2020

And the horrific bout of itchy rash over my whole body that I went through in--let's see...oh, February!--just further convinces me that I have indeed been through an early run of 'rona.

My case doesn't seem to be as bad as yours, PurgedVoter, but patches of skin already prone to itch (shins, for example) got rough and bumpy and occasionally oozy, dark as if bruised, and bled like crazy whenever I gave in and scratched--though that may simply be due to my nails being like shards of glass. The non-prone areas of my body also itched like a m*****f***** from my neck to my ankles, but not so badly that I couldn't ignore it. I was lucky.

You're probably sick of recommendations but I feel I have to share: Gold Bond Psoriasis and Anti-Itch lotions helped greatly (I had some on hand because I occasionally get psoriasis outbreaks on the elbows) but the itch didn't actually stop until I used one of those oatmeal bath treatments (Aveeno brand, to be exact) and soaked in a bathtub for forty minutes using an old peanut-butter jar to constantly scoop the stuff over my body.

Under the impression that the culprit might have been my old body wash, I switched to an everything-free tea-tree-oil soap, which may have been unnecessary but also proved generally soothing.

rashes from detergents and bug bites. I try everything and NOTHING works to stop the itching for long but what I have found works best is from a dermatologist. It is a steroid type cream that actually heals the skin, making the rash go away faster and makes the itching more manageable. You only need a little bit and it goes a long way but do not over use it or it won't be as effective.

It is called...
Clobestasol Propionate Cream, USP, .05%

Ask a doctor to prescribe some! I had a weak, flaky, bleeding in layers-type rash from Oxyclean in my clothes detergent and didn't know that is what caused my rashes for many agonizing and costly months.
