It was packed all right. With a whole bunch of Covid-19, just waiting to attach itself to a whole bunch of stupid people.

(12,564 posts)The purpose is to keep the aisles clear in case of an emergency evacuation, so chairs won't get thrown in the way.
It sure looks sinister, though. And definitely something the Trump campaign would do. They're probably pissed that they didn't think of it first.
Dem2theMax
(9,637 posts)I don't doubt you. But I've been in many a situation where the same type of chairs have been set up and they weren't zip tied together. And a lot of those situations were indoors, where a fire would be a lot worse than if you were outdoors.
At least when you're outdoors, you have a lot of options in which way to run. If you are indoors, you only have a few options.

(12,564 posts)Despite social distancing guidelines from the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention that say people in large gatherings should wear face masks and attempt to stay at least six feet apart, there are hundreds of black plastic folding seats linked together with plastic ties at the Mount Rushmore National Memorial amphitheater, where President Trump is expected to attend, speak and view a fireworks show tonight.
"Folding chairs at an event like these need to be zip tied together by code, per a public safety official involved with the event," a public safety official tells CNN. "In case of an emergency, like a fire event or a storm or anything that would cause people to quickly move out, the zip ties would ensure that the chairs will not be easily knocked over or fly into egress paths moving a full row of chairs, rather than one or two. Additionally, the zip tied chairs then cannot be used as a weapon."
About 2/3 the way down the page.

(9,637 posts)I just did a Google Search and sure enough, they do have codes to enforce tying chairs together. Amazing!
I'm flabbergasted. But I found a whole bunch of examples. Thank you for the information.

(9,760 posts)FFS, if that's a major concern at a gathering, so much so that you need to tie the chairs together, I'm just staying home forever.

(33,992 posts)If you need to get out quickly, you don't want have to move the entire row of chairs to escape.

(37,982 posts)The thing was held at the park's amphitheater and from what I have googled, the seating capacity is about 2500. Add, press, crew, security and hangers on and 3700 sounds about right.

(5,268 posts)Mount Rushmore has 3 million visitors per year and considering that most go during the summer and 4th of July is one of the biggest days, this number is a pittance. Besides seating space, there is a lot of natural space in the area so many thousand can actually visit at once. It looks like a nice little covid-nest.

Seems to me what enables a lot of the MAGA crowd is their perceived "strength in numbers".
This may mean that (being the cowards they are) they will start to trickle away and hopefully turn on him as the "loser" he is.
