There's only one polling place open in Louisville, KY . Guess who's there feeding those waiting ?

Last edited Tue Jun 23, 2020, 07:44 PM - Edit history (1)

Voters in Louisville, Kentucky have only one polling station in the entire city where they can cast their ballot in today's election.

Chef Jose Andres is feeding them all.

Joe Biden needs to award Chef Andres the Presidential Medal of Freedom.

Crazy scene in Louisville, with doors closed at 6 pm with more than a hundred people waiting to vote, but doors have been reopened and people will get to vote

14. We downsized in our county early this month for the primary.

Our county has about 260,000 residents and it was originally scheduled for 116 voting places with 5 early voting locations. After the virus it went to 25 locations and 1 early voting place.

shouldn't be this all mail-in election given the pandemic? Did those people not receive their absentee ballots? Or did they not bother even requesting them?

22. Yes. Election Commission approved everyone eligible for mail voting.

A much higher proportion of people voted by mail than normal.

23. if everyone could get mail ballot then no voter suppression?

IMO, if everyone can get mail-in ballot, there is no need for polling places kept open during the pandemic; instead of polling places there should be ballot drop off boxes. Why only 27% of voters requested mail-in ballots in KY?

17. why the rush to close?

6:00 p.m.: Democratic U.S. Senate Candidate Charles Booker has filed an injunction in Jefferson County Circuit Court, seeking to keep polls open in Louisville until 9pm. A spokesman for the campaign said Booker was filing the motion because there is currently a long line of cars waiting to get into the Kentucky Expo Center, the county’s only in-person election day polling place. Despite that injunction, the doors to the Expo Center closed at 6:00.

i do not have a favorite candidate in this at all but everyone that wants to vote should be able to vote

Problem here was a huge traffic jam of folks on the way to the center. Injunction acquired
Problem solved.

GOOD for those dozens of shut-out people, no doubt come from work, who banged on the building and demanded to be able to vote.

30. It will take a COnstitutional Amendment to do away with USPS

also, any state with VBM can set up their own dropboxes for election workers to collect the ballots. They do this in Arizona, Georgia, and other places. Sturdy ,secure locked boxes, scattered all over town in public buildings like libraries, schools, courthouses, post offices and even malls, grocery stores. (per my daughter in Arizona)

32. have you seen it? 269,000 square foot arena.

It has been open for Early Voting in person since June 15
Many people chose to vote by mail
Postcards sent to every voter in KY advising local information; what to do and how to do it
Free Lyft, Free public transportation and free parking at the center.
Voting booths were set up 6 feet apart for social distancing, so there were plenty of voting machines. Apparantly things went smoothly until the end of the day when the last minute voters started heading for the location. Because of the giant traffic jam, the county judge issued an injunction to allow the location to stay open until 9 pm.
I checked in on the live blog off and on all day, and there were not lines until late in the day.

I run elections here in Fort Worth and I have had that huge rush at the end of the day. I closed the doors at 7 and at 7:01 folks pulled into the parking lot but I could not let them in. There were so many in line at 7 that it was nearly 9 pm before the last one voted.

I think they handled it very well.

So you took away peoples right to vote because of circumstances beyond their control? Babysitter/ flat tire/ overtime/ medical emergency/etc etc. And yes I understand there are a lot of "last minute" people, and government always needs excessive rules
for everything. But shouldn't the law read polls stay open until the last person has voted regardless of the time?

38. There has to be a closing time

If the law read “polls stay open until the last person has voted regardless of the time” then how would they ever close?

How would you ever know the last person had shown up?

Someone new could always show up 1 minute, 5 minutes, or an hour or more later.

Certainly closing at 6pm is ridiculous. Impossible for many people to get there from work. Even 7pm doesn't help all that much.

So, yes - midnight on voting day would be much better.

remember this is a primary not a general election. There could be just as many Republicans out there trying to get in as Democrats....

35. This is a warning for all of us.

The Republicans will shut down the election process if they can.
You can bet there are more polling places in Republican areas of the state.
It's case of election tampering and we need to have this stopped right now.
There are less than 5 months until the national election...less than 5 months to insure there are enough polling stations and voting booths to give our people a chance to vote.

Fortunately, the Republicans in Georgia and Kentucky has shown their hand. I hope the people in those states volunteer in large numbers to sufficiently staff an adequate number of polling stations.
They're going to have to do it soon.

KY's SoS is a Republican. Louisville has a Democratic leaning electorate. So, put a single polling place there - for 600,000 voters. Make it hard to request an absentee ballot. Aaaaand........POOF! Instant voter suppression!

So clever.
