House Majority Whip Jim Clyburn said Sunday no one is going to defund the police

"We can restructure the police forces, restructure, reimagine policing," he added. "That is what we are going to do. The fact of the matter is, the police have a role to play. What we have got to do is make sure that their role is one that meets the times, one that responds to these communities that they operate in."

Protesters across the country have rallied behind a call to defund police departments following the death of George Floyd in Minneapolis and others. But top Democrats on the Hill have spoken out against those calls.

"The fact of the matter is, this is a structure that has been developed that we have got to deconstruct," Clyburn told host Jake Tapper. "So, I wouldn't say defund. Deconstruct our policing."

Great message to the country from the Honorable brother Clyburn. A message to the sinister plot to so radicalize this issue and help Trump.

Not defund police REFORM THE POLICE.

We don't need this hard-headed militancy. Something the tabloid press wants so they can have a political horse race and get ratings.

We don't need ratings but a slam-dunk victory of Joe Biden over Trump.

2. I like that he is looking for different messaging and not falling back on "reform"

Many don't people don't trust "reform" efforts for good reason (see, e.g. welfare "reform). He seems to be sensitive to that while also acknowledging that "defund" is political kyrptonite on a national level.

3. You are so right. "defund" is political kyrptonite on a national level."

I don't get why so many people don't see "defund" as the red meat it is that repugs welcome to get their vote out in November. There isn't any worse messaging for us to get behind.

5. Defund equals Abolish, to most people. Nobody's going to support that.

I understand they mean to turn issues over to other agencies and move funding from policing to drug programs, mental health programs and social and education programs. But 'defund' is such poor, poor wording. No politician in their right mind and many voters won't support "abolish the police" -- and that's what they're hearing when the word "defund" is used.

I'm sure some may think abolishment of police is a good idea. But it's not. We do not want law enforcement by anarchy in this country -- where right wing militias like Cliven Bundy and his gang or Duck Dynasty wannabe military "heroes" are enforcing our laws. That would be much worse than what we have now. Maybe some would disagree about that but they need to be careful what they wish for, just IMO.

Nobody is going to support abolishing the police.

6. In some towns 'abolish the police' is the..

only way to fix something that's been broken for a long time. The problem for me, is that like so much else, people think it's a federal government thing.

Ahmaud Arbery Shooting Spurs Calls to Disband Police Force

The fatal shooting of Ahmaud Arbery in southeastern Georgia is fueling calls to disband the Glynn County Police Department, an agency that has been embroiled in controversy for years.

A grand jury last year faulted the department for a culture of coverup and abuse of power, prompting efforts to overhaul the agency that were gathering momentum when Mr. Arbery, a 25-year-old black man, was killed on Feb. 23. Four days after his death, another grand jury indicted Police Chief John Powell and three other current and former officers over alleged wrongdoing in a narcotics unit.

7. When

Human beings stop being human and learn to love rather than hate then we can abolish the police.

Would these folks like to abolish police in Chicago first?

Often, Its black people who benefit most from the police.

Just say REFORM police. That's the right thing to do and say.

Why provoke with that term. Someone's looking for attention or trying to stir up trouble.

I wonder who coined that terminology?
