Speaking of auto racing---ever been to a demolition derby? Went to 1 in 80s at an IA county fair

Went with now ex and my son. It was something else! A loud, fascinating memory.

I don't know how drivers survive!

2. I've driven in one at the county fair

Had an old '76 caprice tank that was on life support. I have no statistics but it does not seem that dangerous... very seldom does anyone get up much speed in the cramped space.

4. And, the ones I know of, you can only drive in reverse. Lots of buffering in those old trunks.

11. Don't they drive in reverse so they don't damage the cars' radiators...

and thus knock themselves out of the race when the car overheats?

12. They didn't have any coolant in the radiators-- contests didn't last long enough to...

melt the engines, and the danger from steam ruptures could be horrific.

I don't really remember why reverse.

13. Better look it up. They drive backwards so as not to damage...

radiators, and engnes too I should add.

16. Engines, yes. But everyone had different rules. I did look it up earlier, and...

many areas actually allowed forward driving.

Around here, they didn't. And we didn't fill the radiators. But, your mileage may differ.

The one thing I'm pretty sure nobody allowed was a direct hit on the driver's door.

5. Well, I did see it could be lots of fun if you like to make noise and bang things up!

Although I have 2 younger brothers, I only learned from my ex and his stories how much a lot of guys dearly love to make noise, the louder the better

His college had contests between the (guys' ---not sure if they had female students then) dorms to see which could make the loudest noise---they blew up stuff, etc

8. I think they also water down the competition area

to get it a little muddy - also slows things down.

3. Hurricane Hell Drivers!

They were a big deal in central Ohio when I was growing up. In fact, I was watching them at the county fair with my boyfriend the night Nixon resigned. They stopped the show and held a transistor radio up to a microphone to broadcast his speech.

9. That's the highlight attraction at our county fair along

with a tractor pull. They use those old tanks from the 70s station wagons mainly but there is so little space the get up little speed.

10. One of my best memory as a kid

was going to dirt track races, figure 8 races (those get crazy), and demolition derby. Only did it once if I remember.

When the kids were around 8-10 I took them to our county fair which had a bunch of stuff culminating with the demolition derby. Another great memory since I was about that age when I went to my first one.

Yes, they are fun.

18. They've taken wacky figure 8 racing to an even wackier level (although paved)

Skid plate racing, Baby

17. Not a DD, but I have one of the best drag strips in the country 30 minutes from my house

I hope they survive this year, there's nothing like the spectacle of 330 mph drag racing. (Maple Grove Raceway is the track).
