This is out of control now in Atlanta

People have broken into some upscale mall, cleared out Dior and jewelry store and Sephora and others. Walgreens, breaking windows all over the streets, even a Sleep Number bed store. Omni hotel, a chick fil a, college football hall of fame, there are hundreds of clips of people doing this all over Twitter. I am heartbroken for Atlanta. Heartbroken.

She was almost in tears. I feel so bad for her. The people doing this care nothing about George Floyd.

37. I've read about the carnage..

It's sad, yes.

But imho, over the years....the race riots, the destruction of property, isn't so much about

the "trigger " as much as it is the frustration of being black and living in a white man's world.

Rioting is the voice of the unheard. We had better start listening soon.

35. Looting is the voice of opportunistic criminals.

Are you suggesting that King wouldn’t distinguish looting for Louis Vuitton vs rioting in righteous indignation?

5. QUOTE: 'The people doing this care nothing about George Floyd.'

Really? Why do you think that?

It's an expression of pent up frustration and wondering when things will get better.

Instead, they are getting worse.

Hope has given way to anger and the need to destroy. Sympathy and compassionate words now mean nothing. White hot rage needs it's outlet. Destruction is the only answer when that anger takes over.

I'm sure their grievances make a long list. I'm also sure George Floyd is on that list.
This is not a 'thoughts and prayers, let us hold hands and sway, and sing gentle songs of peace and contentment' type gathering of people, it's a full on race riot.

15. Sorry, but breaking into a Christian Dior store in a mall that is closed ...

or other high end stores in a shopping district, is opportunistic looting...plain and simple.

This sort of thing, which also occurred in Minneapolis with the Target store, as well as numerous other documented instances, does ABSOLUTELY NOTHING to move the agenda forward.

I completely understand the frustration of the black community in this country feels toward Law Enforcement and the current state of race relations in the USA, but using that as an excuse or merely cover to rip off a Sephora store because you can isn't helping a fucking thing.

20. Oh, it moves an agenda forward

But I'm afraid the agenda it moves forward belongs to those who gladly exploit deeply instilled fears and racist stereotypes to achieve electoral goals. I just hope the end result of this violence doesn't work toward right-wing advantages.

32. Sadly

I suspect it will help to make sure the Trump voters turn out in full force. His comment about shooting the looters was red meat for his base. The hate of the RW is what has caused all the problems that our citizens of other races ,religions and sexual orientation face everyday and they will double down on that hate because of Trump. The myth of America is the shinning city on the hill it never existed and never will until the RW hate has been stopped for good until then our fellow citizen will continue to be murdered by that hate

it's high end...this isn't about race hate...this is about looting...I get the frustration but stealing a Louis Vuitton $1200 handbag is about a Louis Vuitton handbag and not protesting police violence against blacks...

Look at the images. A lot of them are pretty clearly middle class white kids out for a good time. Others are anarchists motivated by whatever motivates them and latching on to the nearest mass gathering like they always do.

34. I agree. These people have spent their lives oppressed. Most are the victims of

systemic racism. I noticed in the one video where they were looting at a Sephora's the guy was saying to the people, "Go go go, go in and get your, (bitch) something". IOW it was a group thing to try and hurt something that is representative of the wealthy.

What is coming out is far greater than the death of George Floyd.

The rest of us need basics- safety, clean water, nourishing food, meaningful work, good health, decent medical and dental services, transportation, education, clean air, affordable clothing that doesn't fall apart after three washings.....m

Christian Dior and Louis Vuitton--these are corporate Labels sold to people who want to demonstrate their personal worth based upon how much money they have.

The business model is based upon otherness.

Of course stealing stupid luxury goods is wrong but people living day to day lives of misery is wrong too.

19. Herd mentality

Herd mentality, mob mentality and pack mentality, also lesser known as gang mentality, describes how people can be influenced by their peers to adopt certain behaviors on a largely emotional, rather than rational, basis. When individuals are affected by mob mentality, they may make different decisions than they would have individually.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Herd_mentality

Individuals in mobs would not necessarily have engaged in the same acts. But put them in a group or a mob, they tend to assume a life outside their own. That's why police and people not engaging in mob behavior fear them: they are unpredictable, potentially destructive, and can't be easily reasoned with. All you need, as in this case, is one person or a few to do one antisocial act, and the rest of the group/mob follows and even escalates.

23. Atlanta didn't deserve this, even with Kemp

I am grateful that the music studio my friends record out of is in an out-of-the-way neighborhood, and boasts no fancy signs to say what kind of equipment is in there. If people are going to bust into Louis Vitton stores for fancy bags that will not improve police behavior one bit, I'd hate to think what they'd do to a recording studio full of electronic equipment and instruments.

... shot up their former workplaces and schools too, I guess?

At least then everybody is made aware of it, right?

Never mind any "collateral damage" from it, like the co-workers or co-students who tried to be nice to the angry person who had lost all hope from the bad apples.

30. Indeed!

Their actions are not helping ensure justice.

Where are Black Americans to take their righteous anger? I don't know but I fear what some are doing will hurt their cause.

Would MLK approve?
How can anyone be more angry than when those four black schoolgirls were killed in that Birmingham church bombing? Or when nine African Americans were killed during a Bible study in Charleston?

This latest murder protest probably encompasses many issues including closings//joblessness due to CoVids, not only the murder of George Floyd. Kids out of school, young people out of colleges. The country is frustrated. But some of this is just recklessness imho. Provocateurs & the mob mindset are making the situation very dangerous & we know who will be BLAMED.

Atlanta mayor to vandalizing protesters: 'This is not a protest ... this is chaos'

We're certainly not getting help from Republicans or the crooked man-baby.

And they're not listening to Killer Mike: https://www.democraticunderground.com/100213505970

Times likes these I wish I weren't an atheist.

36. I'm heartbroken for the Floyd family

who watched their son/brother/father/uncle/cousin beg and plead for his life but was treated worst than an animal. I am heartbroken for my people, who yet again have to watch the police murder one of us. I'm a heartbroken that people are risking their lives to gather and protest in the midst of a pandemic just to let their voices to heard. I'm scared for my people because we do not know which one of us will be next. I am angry that black people are being hunted down in this country.

I'm not heartbroken for lost of property. I'm sad, sometimes mad, sometimes confused at peaceful protest that turn into looting, vandalism, and arson. I feel for the people who lost their business.
