Joe Biden Not-So-Subtly Shoots Down Klobuchar Running Mate Buzz, Strongly Hints at Black VP

Joe Biden Not-So-Subtly Shoots Down Klobuchar Running Mate Buzz, Strongly Hints at Black VP
By Tommy Christopher

Former Vice President and current presumptive Democratic nominee for president Joe Biden distanced himself from renewed speculation about Sen. Amy Klobuchar as a possible running mate, and strongly hinted his eventual selection could be a black woman.

On Thursday, CBS News’ Ed O’Keefe lit a fire under Klobuchar’s buzz with the scoop that she’s been asked to undergo vetting for the VP slot, which caused quite a stir. Radio host Charlamagne tha God asked Biden about the report toward the end of a radio interview Friday morning.

“A lot of people on social media, they weren’t too happy about that, and it’s because they want your running mate to be a black woman,” Charlamagne said, and referenced a recent Washington Post op-ed “by some of the leading black women voices in this country” making the case for why Biden should pick a black woman as his running mate.

3. I hope he chooses somebody who is not currently serving in a government position

That we can't afford to lose - Elizabeth Warren comes to mind. All of our Dem Senators are crucial to our taking back the Senate. I guess that means Susan Rice or Stacey Abrams. Kamala Harris would be replaced by a Democrat, so I guess she would be OK.

But we can't afford to lose her Senate seat. The Governor of Massachusetts is a Republican. He would replace her with another R and our margin to boot Moscow Mitch to the curb could be that narrow.

14. That's good to know

It would be interesting to see what Governor Baker would do if she needed to be replaced temporarily. He would like to keep his job, so if he nominated a flame thrower, he would piss off a lot of voters. But any R would be bad news.

My fantasy regarding Moscow Mitch is that he loses his seat and can no longer be a trouble maker!

4. Points to be traded with any of the top candidates........

*giving up a valuable Senate seat
*leaning too far one way or another for a particular sector of the party
*selecting someone with "outside" experience - (we need somebody from outside the swamp) ((Oh, yeah, how'd THAT work out!))
*looking for an "ethnic" core supporting a particular candidate
*age

Sometimes I think we "overthink" these issues: at one time I heard that IQ45 wanted Pence as his VP because he KNEW that nobody would want to be rid of him and have Pence as the replacement!

Valid points listed - tough decision for Joe - but I trust him and his team - WE must do EVERYTHING to support them!

17. Polling Shows There is Virtually No Difference in Biden's Polling Regardless of the VP Pick

Biden will flip states but I don't think he needs a certain VP to flip any particular state. VPs rarely flip states. I really like Whitmer but Biden doesn't need her on the ticket to win Michigan. He's leading by 8 points currently in MI.

25. Harris helps flip attempts in GA, FL, and NC more than Klobuchar, and she doesn't

have any of Klobuchar's issues and/or probkematic numbers with PoC, younger age cohorts, and the left half of the party. Harris also, certainly did not, at one point, have a record of voting to confirm 2/3rds of Rump's judicial nominees, including multiple clearly unqualified ones. Nor does she have a temperment/staff abuse history.

Of all the top 12 or so possible options atm, I need the least imagination to see Harris as POTUS. Hell, TBH, I think she would make a better POTUS right now than Biden, but Biden won 10,000% fair and square, and I have complete faith in him to be a superb POTUS as well. It isn't like Harris is some fresh out school, deer in the headlights rookie babe in the woods type either. She will turn 60 during the 2024 elections, with 35 years or so of DA, CA AG, US Senator, and US VP experience at that point (if she is picked as VP.) She is ready rock.

I am fine with them as well, although each has drawbacks as well. There is no perfect candidate. If Obama had been in the US Senate for 10 years instead of 4, he would have been as perfect as one can get. Zero true structural weaknesses. And I am one insanely hard grader. Obamas come along once every 50, 70 years or so, if that.

Joe Kennedy Jr was probably the last one before Obama, and he died in WWII before he could even start the runup pathway..

20. My fear is that we will really learn how racist much of this country is

if he selects a black woman as his VP choice.

Here's something else. I have never understood why a VP pick would make a person jump from voting for one candidate to voting for the other one. What am I missing here?

Back when Gore picked Joe Lieberman as his running mate, I was truly appalled and thought he could hardly have done worse. But it was not about to push me over to voting for Bush.

In my case, I'm going to vote for the Democratic candidate, no matter how unhappy I am with that person.

And not what seems politically expedient to the loudest shouters. It needs to be HIS choice. HE is the one who got nominated, and no one else. I hope he consults long and hard with Obama about this, because Obama made a REALLY good choice when it came down to it.

Personally, I really hope it is neither Harris nor Warren, but will absolutely stand by Biden's decision as long as it's HIS decision.

35. Biden has to think about his VP in terms

of if people will see her as presidential because he might not serve for 8 years. I think Stacey Abrams comes across very well whether it's a normal speech or an interview. She's smart and knowledgeable has lead a life to which many Americans should be able to relate, but I'm not sure most Americans could picture her as President Abrams. It's the same with Demmings, Whitmer and some of the others.

The only VP choices who I believe would pass the "president __________" test are Warren and Harris and mabye Klobuchar.

47. It will depend on the state of the race in July

Biden really wants Klobuchar. She totally fits his criteria and was loyal and supportive even within the primary process. He mentored her as she came into the Senate and worked closely with her as VP, as she was one of the main conduits to the Republican caucus as one of Reed's main Republican whisperers. Given a snap choice under pressure she would be the pick.

But …

He needs to win so by the middle of the July the course of the Virus will be clear as the science and economics catch up. At that point he will know if he needs to play defense and so pick someone who helps with the base. However if it looks like I expect he will make an aggressive pick that is aimed at the wavering Trump base. It really is the difference between a narrow win and a big one,

I have been fighting this fight for a long time. Democrats are really good at imagining the exercise of power, but really bad at imagining the acquisition of it. We have ceded large parts of the electorate, not by policy choices but by understanding what those choices mean.
Take M4A. That is all well and good but it is not the issue in Rural America. The issue there is not how to pay for it but how to get it. Your world looks entirely different when the drive goes from a half hour to a hour to get to the maternity ward or the emergency room.

In the cold hard math of electoral politics a flip counts more then twice as much as a new voter or activating a leaner. It also moves he window of possibility much more as those voter invest in your success.

That is why Klobuchar more then any other candidate is the best choice. Not because she will bring huge amounts of any state EC votes or any particular demographic, but because she will allow those already inclined to go to Joe to solidify that and those who would want to make the switch but are wary to ally those concerns.

If Biden does pick Klobuchar I will breath a huge sigh of relief because that will show a great confidence. What is more it will make Trump's playbook almost unusable. It will be very hard to generate hatred and fear against "Sleepy Joe" and Klobuchar. Doing so will only really hurt him. What is more Biden and Klobuchar are at their core pragmatists not only are the solutions to the current crisis much more inline with progressive goals, but just the huge amount of pending legislation already agreed to by the Senate Democratic caucus and the House will profoundly change the way forward.

50. Sounds more like wishful thinking

Don't see any evidence that he wants her over anyone else. Plus as stated last week in the Washington Post, many African Americans would consider it a slap in the face if he picked her. Don't think progressives would be that enthusiastic either. Plus she would be no help flipping Florida or North Carolina.
