A Costco worker is being praised online after he told a shopper who refused to wear a mask to leave

The internet is praising a Costco worker after he told a customer who refused to wear a mask while shopping to leave the store.

A video that was shared online by the shopper, and that later went viral, shows the standoff between the Costco worker and this member. The worker explains in the video clip that he asking the customer to wear the mask because "this is company policy." The shopper then responds: "And I am not wearing the mask because this is a free country."

"Yes. It's a free country. To explain what that means: #Costco has the right to require that customers wear masks (or shoes or shirts). The customer has the right to shop somewhere else if they don't wish to put on a mask. The customer does NOT have the right to ignore the rules," one Twitter user wrote in response to the video.

"Go #Costco and love this guy! Thank you! Wear a mask," another wrote.

As of May 4, Costco has required all of its members to wear masks when shopping in its stores to protect both workers and customers' safety, as per the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention recommendation. But despite this, its new policy has led to much debate online with some shoppers calling for a boycott of the warehouse chain because of these new rules.

1. I love how this guy thought the video would make him some kind of 'hero'

for refusing to be a "sheep". Kind of blew up in his face, BIG time!

3. "I woke up in a free country!"

What an idiot. In a free country, owners can require people to wear masks on their private property.

9. Did he wake up in Canada or Mexico?

Maybe he just flew in from overseas and feels entitled to access private property without following the rules.

4. I am sure it did to his small but very loud and obnoxious "fellow travelers".

This is the problem with only getting information from one source or perspective. Like you said, he probably thought that many more people supported his position than actually do. The sizable majority of people still have confidence in the word of health experts and support wearing masks in public.

The problem with yahoos like that guy is that they think in extremes. Asking you to wear a mask in a store where you are likely to come into contact with other people and social distancing may be difficult is a rational response to an easily spread virus. The problem is that all these yahoos are hearing is that it is fake, manufactured for social control. They think that other people are hearing the same thing OR as he said in the video, that others are SHEEP and are blindly following recommendations and only he and his fellow travelers have some "truth" that they discovered.

2. Trespass him from the store and revoke his membership.

Costco holds all the cards.

5. Asserting that people who follow the RULES and the LAW are "sheep"

is the latest brainless meme I’m hearing from RW assholes on FB and elsewhere.

One jerk asserted that Hawai’i enforcing its 14-day quarantine rule for tourists visiting the islands was a violation of the right to free speech. Assholes.

6. Posted yesterday, and in that thread I mentioned I saw a Walmart greeter in my town do the same...

Walmart does it smarter, though-- you can't get into the store without a mask.

And, the guy, (who tried to cut the line, too) made the same argument. The "line", in our case, was all masked and largely gloved so he got no sympathy.

No sympathy at all.

I wonder if this "free country" gives him the right to run red lights and drive in the left lane?

12. Same at Costco

You are not allowed into the store without a mask. There are people at the door checking to be sure all have them. So, it sounds like this jerk wore one to get into the store, then took it off so he could be the big shot for his 3000 instagram followers that he's so proud of.

He did a follow up video from his home where he expounds on all of the sheep that are following the rules etc. Makes a big deal of how HE was the only one in the store without a mask and everyone else is stupid etc. I guess he doesn't realize that he makes himself look like a tantrum throwing toddler that is the fool in that scenario.

11. Just got back from a Costco in Florida. Everybody -- little kids to old folks -- wore masks.

No drama at the door, either.

13. I was at a grocery store this morning

and heard my cashier telling a co-worker about a customer earlier who had to leave because he refused to wear a mask. She said it got ugly until the store manager said he would have the police escort the guy out if he did not leave. The customer kept saying that the store was denying him his constitutional rights. The manager/owner said, "It's MY constitutional right to enforce safety rules for MY customers and MY employees in MY store."

I told the cashier that someone else's right to risk his own health and life does not give him the right to risk mine.

I suspect that some person or group has organized these idiotic challenges to safety to deliberately stir up divisions and create the potential for violence.

On my way home, I noticed a huge sign in the window of a rent-to-own store that will re-open soon. It said, "We are a free country BECAUSE we are brave." The word "because" was underlined. As if safety precautions are signs of cowardice. There is nothing brave or intelligent about gasping your last breath, or worse, causing that to happen to others. What phony machismo.

14. Went Costco shopping today

and although everyone who went into the store wore one, there were plenty of assholes who took them off afterwards. It's like they are daring you to tell them to wear it. This is in Sacramento.
