Trump's firing of State Department watchdog may be 'unlawful,' Pelosi says

WASHINGTON, May 17 (Reuters) - U.S. President Donald Trump's firing of the State Department's top internal watchdog "could be unlawful" if it was intended to retaliate against one of his investigations, House Speaker Nancy Pelosi said on Sunday.

Trump late Friday ousted Inspector General Steve Linick, the fourth inspector general he has fired since early April, following his February acquittal by the Republican-controlled Senate in his impeachment trial.

"The president has the right to fire any federal employee, but the fact is if it looks like it's in retaliation for something the IG, the inspector general, was investigating, that could be unlawful," Pelosi said on CNN's "State of the Union."

The top Democrats on the House and Senate Foreign Relations Committee on Saturday began a probe into the firing, saying it was their understanding that Secretary of State Mike Pompeo personally recommended Linick's sacking because the inspector general "had opened an investigation into wrongdoing by Secretary Pompeo himself."

1. At this point, there is nothing they can do about it

They can request documents and Ass Face will either ignore the request or say NO! Go ahead and take him to court. He will push it all the way to SCOTUS.

End of story.

We have passed the point where the Congress has any power of oversight over this moron. Makes me sick.

no end to what he will do on his way out.

I can't even begin to imagine the damage he will do between November 4th. and January 21st. if Biden manages to win - we will look back at these kinds of things and think they were quaint.

He will throw a complete tantrum and try to get Barr and SCOTUS to throw out the election results. He knows that lots of AGs in various states have his name at the top of the indictments list. Will he skip town? It will be ugly, no matter what happens.

Trump didn't. If he had, he would have been walking in the footsteps of Obama, Bush II, and Clinton.

It's the same with a lot of appointees. Most of the most bitter fights over a sacking have involved positions where Obama or Bush II replaced a person and Trump only got around to doing it for reasons that could be questioned a year or three later.
