A 1938 story by the great science fiction writer L. Sprague de Camp entitled Hyperpilosity the plot follows:
In the Great Change of 1971, a virus infects humanity that causes everyone to grow fur all over their bodies. Initial reaction to the plague, dubbed "hyperpilosity" by the news media, is one of panic and horror. Various examples of the troubles resulting are told; the cast of the latest Tarzan movie, for instance, is reduced to frequent all-over shaving to be able to continue filming. There is a run on depilatory products. An immense financial reward is offered to whoever can identify the condition's cause and develop a cure. Against the playing out of plague-fueled societal crisis and change, protagonist Pat Weiss relates how he and his employer, virology professor Oliveira, strive and ultimately succeed in doing just this. Alas for their dreams of riches; by the time their work is complete, mankind has become accustomed to the new state of things and moved on; those who end up profiting are not the scientists but purveyors of currycombs and such.

Very soon living and dying of Covid-19 or whatever mutations may ensue will be as natural as dying from heart disease or certain forms of cancer. We as a race adapt to all situations and move on. Dont think so? Just ask yourself why, when Democrats get into office following Republican crimes and malfeasance do we always accede to just moving on. I guarantee you this will occur after the Age of Trump. I for one dreAd the do-called new normal.

(29,699 posts)and it's been downhill ever since. We moved on from Iran/Contra, 911, Iraq, Afghanistan, Somalia, and we damn sure better not move on from trump. These people have been involved from the beginning and they are serial criminals and must be taken off the streets.

(8,361 posts)for his own pockets, another one like him will get elected. Maybe a slicker one, more polite, but it will happen if Trump doesn't pay.

(57,073 posts)To do otherwise would serve to strengthen the "both parties are the same" argument which is, I believe, the root of voting apathy.
It started with pardoning Nixon, intensified with and following St. Reagan, and look at the exponential result.

I want to see confisgation of ALL assets obtained by emoluments & all other forms of extortion.
Voiding contracts for drilling & mining and sale of our precious natural lands WITH ENORMOUS PENALTIES.
And, yes, capital punishment for treason.
Anything short of this will leave American voters again feeling screwed, and rightly so.

(5,639 posts)That has been the normal for most presidencies. It is why we now have dump doing whatever he wants.
While I hope he is held accountable and the full arm of the law is thrown at him and his clan, I have my concerns. Do the elected officials have what it takes to do the dirty work? It will be hard work for sure.
I liken it to flipping the table on an already finished 10,000 piece puzzle, putting the pieces back together is often times seen as too much work and the puzzle lies broken in the box as a reminder of the once fulfilled dream.

SheltieLover
(57,073 posts)but from what I am reading, a vaccine is a long way off. One (non-peer-reviewed) report out of China states they have identified 30 mutations, some more aggressive than others.

(100,056 posts)Right now I am increasingly pessimistic that one will not be found this year, but considering that I've read that trials are starting in the UK, Germany, and Australia, there is some hope. Some.

(30,613 posts)but testing is inherently slow. Can't assess long-term safety and efficacy without...long-term tests.

Of course we also have a dozens of progressive men but for me women come to mind right now because women really do kick ass once theyre evolved beyond a male centric consciousness. I do believe younger men, the ones brought up by Feminists are much more likely to be Progressive. There just has to be enough Progressives of both sexes pulling together to make a difference. Luckily we might just get a bunch more in the November elections.
As a Progressive Boomer who has been disappointed at our government representatives dragging their feet to make any meaningful progress in my lifetime, Im more than willing to vote for the woke younger people. People who will prosecute the criminals, not out of revenge, but because its the right thing to do for the future of our country.
