ACTION: Tell Hobby Lobby to quit meddling with women's health!

Hobby Lobby today said that they are suing the government because they don't want to provide women with Plan B/morning after contraception through insurance plans. Below is the email I sent to their media relations specialist, Debra Love ([email protected])

Debra:

I'm writing because I just learned that Hobby Lobby is suing the government because you, as a company, do not want to provide employees with insurance that would cover the morning after pill.

I want you to understand two things.

First, the morning after pill does not end pregnancies. The morning after pill prevents ovulation, thereby preventing a pregnancy from starting. If the pill is taken after fertilization of an egg has happened, the morning after pill will not interfere with development. I know this because I volunteer as an advocate for sexual assault survivors during hospital examinations, and I have heard nurses explain this to women countless times. Therefore, if your company is objecting to the morning after pill, what you are objecting to is simple contraception. I find this to be an archaic,anti-science and anti-woman stance that I cannot support.

Second. I knit. A lot. I make money knitting. That means I buy a lot of yarn and needles. I happen to be particularly fond of the fuzzy Yarn Bee Cameo brand, which, as you know, is available exclusively at Hobby Lobby. I also have friends who paint, friends who crochet, friends who bead, friends who sew and friends who do all manner of creative things. And even the less creative among us have been known to take an interest in decorating their homes. We are professional women with money that we spend on our creativity. But we have a lot of options as to where we spend this money. As of now, I will no longer be spending it with your stores, because I cannot support a company that would deny its own employees something simple as a single pill that will ensure she can maintain control of her reproduction.

I will be telling my friends about this lawsuit of yours. I have a lot of friends. Some are in the media, others have political connections, MANY of them are active feminists. I will be telling them about what Hobby Lobby is doing so that they can also make their best choices about which businesses deserve their hard-earned dollars and which do not.

I'm hoping your company reconsiders and withdraws this wrong-headed and misguided lawsuit.

Smart, respectful, factual. You hit all the right points. I hope you hear back from these folks. It's letters like yours they can't dismiss as being from fringe lefties. I hope it works.
