Take a look at the smirk on Mitt Romney's face at the conclusion of his disastrous press conference basically accusing the president of sympathizing with the people who attacked and killed American embassy personnel in Libya:
That's the smirk of a very self-impressed man. He has no clue how deeply he's hurt himself.
Meanwhile, check out what a real president (or two?) looks like:

WTF is there to smile about Romney? Really?
by Jed Lewison
Here's another look at the self-satisfied smirk on Mitt Romney's face after he attacked (President Obama for sympathizing with America's attackers) explained to America why he wasn't ready to be president:
Romney is getting skewered across the political spectrum, from the media and from politicians. Even conservatives, who probably feel free to unload now that they know he's going to lose, are slamming him.
"They were just trying to score a cheap news cycle hit based on the embassy statement and now its just completely blown up," said a very senior Republican foreign policy hand, who called the statement an "utter disaster" and a "Lehman moment" a parallel to the moment when John McCain, amid the 2008 financial crisis, failed to come across as a steady leader.
There's a lot more in Ben Smith's report about how Romney's gambit is backfiring even among his allies. It's really a remarkable event in this campaigneasily the most spectacular political blunder of the 2012 cycle so far.
Also, check out Josh Marshall's tick-tock detailing how this episode makes it clear that Mitt Romney doesn't have what it takes to be president.

I love how the naïve and ignorant resort straight to derision.
No, "How did you come to that conclusion?", "What makes you think that?", or "Why would they want that?".... all of which I have very reasonable explanations with pretty sound evidence for.
Nope, the first resort of the ignorant is 'Tinfoil Hat!'.
I get the same reaction from deniers when I tell them climate change is real and our fault.
I suppose in keeping with the spirit of your response, I shall welcome you to 'ignore'. It seems only 'fitting'.

I wonder what Mittsy's fundraising will look like after this debacle? Will these guys double down and whistle past the graveyard, or will they say Fuck It and use their dough to try to buy Congress alone.

Their only hope is to try to co-opt corporate-friendly types from the other side of the aisle; however, I don't think the public will tolerate too much more of that, either. The electorate has had just about enough and they're reaching the apex of their disgust meters. If articulate leadership (like an Elizabeth Warren) can prevail and lead a discussion of this issue in the public square, these clowns can be pushed back. Money doesn't buy everything, all the time--on the odd occasion, integrity comes back into fashion.

Also, a sign of enlightenment. At least you will consider the possibility that there is reason behind my predictions.
There is.
Unfortunately, it is both simple and complicated. Simple in the sense that the trends are unavoidable and thus give us a basis for making projections and correlating the facts. Complicated in that there are indeed many working parts to consider. However, with the inexorable trends, those parts appear to line up with alarming coherence.
As I've said before, I've been predicting another term for Obama for some years now. The reason is because the time did not seem 'ripe' to bring back Republican rule. Now let me explain:
I start with a very simple presumption. One that has been proven out through history as the main driver of collapse of otherwise stable societies.
I call it the 'power paradigm'.
Power is a very interesting thing. Hold on.... There:
http://www2.ucsc.edu/whorulesamerica/power/wealth.html
This is a man who has spent countless hours researching the phenomenon of power. He knows what he's talking about.
My take on it reflects his: Power is, by necessity, a self-seeking thing. Once one has 'power', only one of two things can happen to it: He can lose it, or he can gain more. There are rarely examples of those with power not seeking to gain more. In most cases, that power becomes lost to other power-mongers.
The more power one has, the more crucial it is to exercise it for the attainment of greater power. This is for the simple reason that those with already more power tend to see the less powerful ambitions as an eventual threat, and therefore seek to constrain their potential. What is fascinating about this is the self-fulfilling nature of the power struggle. In order to avoid being 'constrained' and losing power, the less powerful must find ways to usurp or surpass the power of their more potent adversaries... thus becoming exactly the threat of original concern.
That is at the heart of the power paradigm: Those with less power are automatically the enemy of those with more.... regardless of the intentions of the less powerful.
It is this simple presumption, based on a simple truth, that puts all other things into perspective in these wretched times.
Now... let's look at how power is attained.
#1) Wealth. Wealth is the simplest, easiest way to attain power.
#2) Position. Those in a powerful position have power. Duh.
#3) Allegiance. Those with power can create relationships that are mutually beneficial. Trading wealth, resources, other allegiances, and positions, or using those to achieve common ends create gains in power... sometimes for all parties involved, sometimes not.
The one to focus on, for the moment, is wealth.
Where does wealth come from?
Us.
After a certain point, less wealth comes from exploited resources, therefore more has to come from the labor/consumer class. As those with the least power, they are also the easiest to extract it from. Anyone who doubts that an ever greater consolidation of power into the hands of ever fewer individuals has been happening simply isn't paying attention. There is such a thing as 'the powers that be', and they are absolutely exercising that power to undermine our fundamental rights. You'd have to be completely ignorant of recent history to deny that.
And that is where shit starts falling into place.
I'll try and make this point succinct, as I have to leave soon:
In order for the ultra-elites to continue vying for the augmentation and consolidation of ever more power, the US must be destroyed.
No, that's not a crazy stretch at all. In fact, the proof of our undoing as a nation is all around us in the graft, corruption, and lobbying for the destruction of civil rights, labor, and infrastructure. Anyone who can't see that we are being destroyed as a nation is simply ignorant of events.
But why must we be destroyed?
Because the US is the greatest threat, by virtue of the Constitution, to the absolute consolidation of power which cannot be achieved without utterly violating the human rights enshrined therein.
So, now that we know THAT they want, indeed NEED, to destroy America, the question becomes: "How would they go about it?"
I do have to go, but I'll return.
For the moment, put yourself in the place of a person who owns and controls vast wealth and resources, and has whatever alliances he needs in order to secure his hold on power. Then think: "What would I do to get more power and protect myself in the process?"

(6,785 posts)I think a good many of them would rather see Mitt than Obama, for a few reasons:
1) Obama isn't nearly hawkish enough. Drone attacks aren't enough. Even if we put a billion drones in the air, you can still funnel far more money to the "right" sort of people with a ground war; especially if you've ensured the ground war is one we'll lose because we have no idea what "winning" is supposed to be. (Like George the Lesser did in Iraq)
2) Obama is disappointing to many of us on economic issues, but Mitt is entirely preferable to Obama to many of the 1% because they don't view it as accumulating money, they view it as looting a sinking ship. So they absolutely want the guy that will give them the biggest shovel.
3) Obama isn't distracting the bottom 98% or so from the looting as much as Romney. Romney would go to any lengths, including starting a massive war just to create one more smokescreen to hide the guys dragging the giant bags of money off. Even if you disagree with Obama's actions, his rhetoric during the campaign is helping shine a light on them, and they're not enjoying it.
Look at how hard most of the media is working to make sure we know what an awesome guy Mitt is if you don't think the 1% have a strong preference.

Still, it does not justify murder.
But the problem is to interpret these events and to prevent a recurrence.
Then there is the question of how far Netanyahu will go to score points with his electorate and supporters and whether he is in any way involved in the film, etc.
The timing of his visit raises questions -- inevitably.
And, just so you know, people who watch my posts on DU know that I am outspoken in my general support for Israel.

I keep saying it; it's not enough simply to get Obama re-elected; the party of Rethugs has to be utterly wiped out before any real progressive change will happen, and given the current levels of ignorance among the voting population I despair of ever seeing that happen in my lifetime.
