A fable for our times.

Once upon a time, there was a magician who did acts with birds. He loved his birds and constantly doted on them through his act. There was one trick he did where a bird would disappear from one cage and appear in another. Other magicians were completely puzzled. Oh, the part about making a bird appear in the empty cage was a piece of cake. They could all do that. The unfathomable part was how did he make the bird disappear from the original cage.

Absolutely no one could figure it out and you know they tried. It wasn't until he died and other magicians got a chance to look at his apparatus were they able to understand how the trick was done. Turns out it was rock simple. At the moment the bird was to disappear, a powerful spring-loaded false bottom smashed the bird completely flat. He sacrificed one of his beloved birds every time he did the trick. The real trick was to accomplish the goal with an act so cruel that no one's mind would even go there.*

That's how Trump works. Voters in cities won't support you? Let them die. Oh sure, many of your supporters will die too, but if more of your adversaries die than your supporters, you win.

Unbelievable, you say? Well, that's why the trick works.

* Two comments. One, I have no idea if the tale is based on a true story or not. Two, this was shown in the movie, The Prestige, so many of you have seen it already. The Prestige is a cool movie if you like psychodramas with unpredictable plot twists.

Tell an untruth that’s so extreme that people will assume it must be true.
