Alabama and Miss. Governors share the same denial of virus danger.

Alabama Gov. Kay Ivey has shrugged off the idea of a shelter in place and/or emergency declaration about the virus. Says doesn't want to hurt the economy.

Exact words: ""We are not California. We are not New York. We are not even Louisiana."

Mississippi Gov. Tate Reeves signed an executive order Tuesday that effectively overruled cities who shuttered non-essential businesses amid the coronavirus pandemic.

Reeves, a Republican, signed an order that labels businesses such as gun stores, department stores and real estate offices as both "essential" and "critical."

He said: "Mississippi's never going to be China," "Mississippi's never going to be North Korea."

2. Op ed from former MS Repub congressman..

... warned that things will get very dire in Mississippi very quickly.

Unfortunately, I'm unable to find the link at the moment, but the gist was that their health care system has become an even greater shambles since rejecting subsidy for expansion of medicaid.

The system was overwhelmed by last flu season. If they couldn't handle that, they are utterly unequipped to face the current crisis. Particularly given that the percentage of vulnerable people with health problems and vulnerable poor are apparently higher than any other state.

I assume Alabama residents will likewise suffer. I believe they also rejected Medicare expansion and also have high poverty rates.

It makes me want to cry. The mother of a dear friend of mine lives in a little town outside Meridian. I am very, very, afraid for her. She is 89 (sharp and truly a "tough old bird, but still very vulnerable).
