How the hell is Trump's approval rating so high?
https://projects.fivethirtyeight.com/trump-approval-ratings/?cid=rrpromo
This response has been a COMPLETE DISASTER and people are satisfied?? I can’t fathom it.

1. Most people see snippets of Trump on their local news
So they think he’s on top of it.

2. He says he's doing a great job so America believes him.
Probably the more people that die the higher his approval will get.
Once we get to the millions dead they will be begging him to be president again. There are more stupid people in America than there are stars in the sky. |

And the White House press can't ask follow up questions--the White House cuts their mic.

4. IMO, it's a lie. But that's just me.
I've got this nasty suspicion that Parscale's hacked into the polling organizations and is changing their raw data. It's beyond reason-- WAY beyond reason that Trump would be holding onto 43-45% approval rating. I was around when Bush 43 was at around 31-29%, and he wasn't nearly as nuts as Trump. I want to believe that he's just got millions of true believers, but there's no way he could hang onto 43%. The actual number should be more like 15%. What's also remarkable is that the numbers are CONSTANT. They seldom get beyond 45 or below 42. It's too constant. Presidential approval ratings are always fluid. So something's wrong. And I think it's either Parscale or other hackers who are working with Parscale. What will happen in the general is that the reported data will NOT be consistent with exit polling data because the actual vote tally will have been altered.
I'm hoping that the Democratic voting will overcome Trump's cheating. It will have to be a landslide. |

16. A silver lining, of sorts.
After the Sept. 11 attacks, Dubya had like an 85-90% approval rate.
Trump has a major, deadly health crisis going on, plus a tanking economy. 50% does not suggest that the nation is rallying behind him. Most Americans aren't marinating in politics like most of us here. An earlier poster mentioned that sound bites and press conferences can make Trump look like he's on top of it to the casual observer. And you know damned well that FOX is doing a fine editing job on Trump's appearances. |

6. Because when people are scared, they turn to the strong man.
Imagine you are down at your neighborhood pub and The Zombie Apocalypse breaks out.
There you are, with about twenty of your neighbors, and you can all see the carnage taking place outside. Who will your neighbors turn to? Who will lead? The brash bully, whose a dimwit but everyone knows is hell in a bar fight? Or the smart guy, who says we need to lay low, observe The Undead, gather data, determine their weakness, and then gather input and work out a plan? I think I know my neighbors pretty well. |

7. The awareness level of the typical DU poster is probably a lot higher
than the average joe/joan. Hanging around here so much, we just naturally presume that there are a lot of others like us out there. In actuality, that's not true. Those "Man on the Street" interviews, while often hilarious on the surface, are really a sad commentary on non-informed people who may or may not vote.

... look like he was relying on some unseen mastery of business to make what were clearly uninformed, off-the-cuff decisions about the contestants. Trump as a business genius is a media myth. You can fool some of the people all of the time..

9. Never been over (or even close to) 50%.
He uses his twitter feed to entertain his base. The small increase to 45% is because many people are scared, misinformed and anxious, and he repeats his 'we're doing a great job' lie over and over and over again to keep them believing he's doing one (he doesn't).

Last edited Wed Mar 25, 2020, 05:52 AM - Edit history (1) When Bush sr started Gulf War I, his poll nums went from mediocre thru the roof. Same with Junior after 9/11. The country comes together under the president in a crisis - no matter how they feel about the guy in charge. Donnie’s numbers have gone up about 3 or 4 points after shiling on TV tooting his own horn every day for 2 weeks. This is a minor blip and he’ll be back to 40 or less in no time.

18. Dems failure to counter his 'daily briefings'.
If all your typical American sees is Trump and the covid crew giving briefings every evening - they see him as 'doing something', and won't give credit to Dems for this rescue bill which is ideologically a Democratic/left leaning thing to do - but Trump will be viewed as the one 'helping people' due to Dems failure to put their faces on it.

They can't compete with Trump's White House trappings. And no White House journalist is allowed to ask follow up questions--their mic gets cut off.

22. Pelosi and Schumer could do daily briefings
maybe along with Dem officials from various states.
Cuomo has really been the lone strong Dem voice in all of this; without him it seems like we're just Trump's little elves just coming up with a bill he wants, rather than letting the public know that this is a Dem/left/FDR type measure to save the economy. |

Pelosi or any Dem needs to give a presser calling out Trump's lies about the testing, medical supplies etc. Each of lies need to be rebutted with the truth. Why are Dems silent during this crime against humanity? He's killing people.
