NO! Chloroquine NOT approved for use in COVID-19 & in Africa, Trump's idiocy resulting in toxicities

The suggestion that it MIGHT be useful is based on a Chinese study in vitro (lab only) and French anecdotal case series data that suggests it might decrease viral load. Because it might be expedited, based on its GENERAL safety profile had Trump seizing on it as the "magic bullet." However, until a study proves efficacy and safety in the contest of COVID-19, Trump's idiotic statements are just that. And any such studies are going to take considerable time. While physicians can use medications FDA-approved for another purpose (i.e., Off Label use is legal) it is extremely risky for a physician to do so outside an established drug trial, given the seriousness of COVID-19 infection and the scarcity of justification.

As to what Trump has caused to happen in Africa as a result of his irresponsibility and underscoring that Cholorquine is NOT without safety concerns (toxicity usually results in retinal damage) :

Coronavirus: Nigeria reports chloroquine poisonings after Donald Trump touts antimalarial drug as treatment

Surge in interest raises concerns about people ‘self-medicating without guidance’

Authorities in Nigerian megacity Lagos said on Friday that hospitals had seen cases of chloroquine poisoning after US President Donald Trump touted the drug as a treatment against the coronavirus.

Trump said during a press conference on Thursday that the antimalarial drug had been “approved” to treat Covid-19 by the US Food and Drug Administration, only for the head of the agency to push back and say it had not yet been given a definitive green light.

The drug has recently been used to treat coronavirus patients in China and in France, where some researchers said it showed great promise, though scientists agree that only more trials would determine if it really works and is safe.

Health officials in Lagos said that there had already been claims online pushing chloroquine as a treatment and that Trump’s message had seen interest surge.

1. It's like a challenge to him - to tell an increasingly dangerous lie every day in the press conf.

2. Yes. and that he may end up killing millions with his incompetence does not even phase him

(I mean from his lack of COVID-19 response--not from Chloroquine)

3. Chloroquine is more toxic than Hydroxychloroquine

The French researchers used the better tolerated Hydroxychloroquine together with the common antibiotic azithromycin (Z-pack) to reduce viral loads in a small experiment, with promising results. Hydroxychloroquine is currently approved by the FDA for use in treatment of several conditions including arthritis and lupus (but not Covid-19). I think we'll know know fairly quickly if this combo is a breakthrough or not; even if it's not approved in the US it's doubtlessly already being tried in countries with looser testing standards. If real world results are anything like what the French researchers found it should be apparent in weeks - if not sooner. Given the small sample size it's hard to get TOO excited about it just yet, but we're desperate for good news.

In the meantime Trump should just keep his mouth shut about stuff he knows nothing about, I doubt he'd know the difference between almond extract and cyanide.
