Here is the union's press release. Please read it for details about this strike. There is so much misinformation, right here on DU!

This is about teachers demanding what's best for children.
Solidarity with Chicago teachers! They are demanding what the children of Chicago deserve - great schools!

(2 posts)While I support the teachers, why is a strike the best method to use to negotiate?
http://www.createdebate.com/debate/show/Is_a_strike_the_best_method_for_a_union_to_use_to_negotiate
no_hypocrisy
(46,080 posts)To respond, striking is never the first option; it's the last. When parties (labor and management) fail to agree on even the smallest point, the only tool that labor has is to strike. It forces management to return to the table and at least accept some terms that labor is trying get into a new agreement.

(18,530 posts)As I mentioned on another thread, it pisses me off that the only civil servants who get appreciated publicly are in the military or are first responders. Teachers make enormous sacrifices to help raise our children for us, then get beat up for it. Thank all of you for being crazy enough to do the right thing.

(15,774 posts)They are stripping the quality of the inner city schools to make a buck. Instead of raising their tax base, they are short changing the kids education. Schools in the suburbs have such "luxuries" as a library, school nurse, and counsulers. Inner city kids need it just as much, if not more.

(14,498 posts)I often think that if we could reduce the system to it's essentials: the teacher, the parent and the child ... and let the important decision making stay within that constellation... we could get ourselves from under these hideously oversized, maddeningly politicized bureaucracies.
And in doing so... we we'd be able to offer a better product.

(4,035 posts)Seriously, the issues seem incredible (as in, difficult-to-believe,) to this Norwegian teacher. It certainly makes our complaints pale in comparison.
You guys do fantastic jobs under incredibly difficult conditions, and you deserve better. If you don't get better, the children will certainly suffer because of it, so there is a trickle-down effect here that isn't fake. Class room limits, liveable wages, all your demands can be summed up as a demand to be respected as the professionals you are.
I support you.

(342 posts)Thanks for posting it, xchrom. The message of the song transcends borders as exemplified by the diverse group of musicians from all over the world. It is critically important for us to stand by the Chicago teachers in their fight for fairness. Maybe we could just skip the next generation of wars and spend the money on our educational system. Seems fair to this old man.

getting textbooks in the classroom on time, and not 6 weeks later, I could not believe it.
And another issue, getting music and art back into the schools!
Class size!
It is about a LOT more than money.
Their proposed teacher evaluation does not sound good either. I agree with Ms. Lewis, evaluate the teachers on what they CAN control, not on factors outside of their control (such as poverty and violence, issues that are certainly at the schoolhouse door, and in the school).
Rahm, better re-think this one.

(10,270 posts)how ...Oh those damn unions have no idea how they are being perceived by the larger General Public when they pull this nonsense over how they refuse the raise they got offered, and how that looks in a down economy...
That's when I came here and found out that I think they SHOULD be on strike (no AC? In a PUBLIC SCHOOL?)
WTF if that were "Mr. Mayor's" Publicly-Funded place of work, and the AC went out, you think that fucker would have shown up AT ALL till the problem was fixed? NO, and he would have read the riot act to the Maintenance Dept. for good measure I'M SURE.
The "General Public" that Joey is oh so worried about will see it that way, too, as soon as they find out how bad that working environment is for those people we like to call "invaluable" to our Society and Future.

And a word to organized labor: Did you know that virtually ALL voting machines in the U.S. are run on 'TRADE SECRET' code--code that the public is forbidden to review--some 70% of it owned and controlled by one, private, far rightwing-connected corporation (ES&S, which bought out Diebold)? Did you know that half the states do NO AUDIT of this so-called vote counting AT ALL, and that the others do only a miserably inadequate 1% audit?

(10,117 posts)...having a voice in the changes education reform is bringing to public schools. Despite the spin to the contrary, most teachers are caring, wonderful, hard-working (past contract hours on their own) people.
Much of education reform seeks to undermine what they do and threatens the future of public schools. Public school teachers know this. They are doing their best to educate the general public on this issue.
We should be THANKING them, not attacking them.

(3,871 posts)These seem to be quite reasonable concerns:
09/09/2012
...
Recognizing the Boards fiscal woes, we are not far apart on compensation. However, we are apart on benefits. We want to maintain the existing health benefits.
Another concern is evaluation procedures. After the initial phase-in of the new evaluation system it could result in 6,000 teachers (or nearly 30 percent of our members) being discharged within one or two years. This is unacceptable. We are also concerned that too much of the new evaluations will be based on students standardized test scores. This is no way to measure the effectiveness of an educator. Further there are too many factors beyond our control which impact how well some students perform on standardized tests such as poverty, exposure to violence, homelessness, hunger and other social issues beyond our control.
We want job security. Despite a new curriculum and new, stringent evaluation system, CPS proposes no increase (or even decreases) in teacher training. This is notable because our Union through our Quest Center is at the forefront teacher professional development in Illinois. We have been lauded by the District and our colleagues across the country for our extensive teacher training programs that helped emerging teachers strengthen their craft and increased the number of nationally board certified educators.
We are demanding a reasonable timetable for the installation of air-conditioning in student classrooms--a sweltering, 98-degree classroom is not a productive learning environment for children. This type of environment is unacceptable for our members and all school personnel. A lack of climate control is unacceptable to our parents.

(1 post)Ryan, Emanuel....what a pair.... I've been a teacher for 25 years in a private school without a union...my wife had a union in LA long before me. She was much more secure and much happier. Each year I'd worry, would I get a new contract.... We need more unions, not less.... Go Chicago Teachers!

Hard to achieve if we're all being beaten down into corporate drones without basic human rights in our modern American totalitarian workplace!
