(115,674 posts)without any interference from anybody. He's also being prosecuted in California where he was indicted by a grand jury on 36 charges of tax dodging, perjury, and theft from clients, and he was arrested in January - during his disbarment hearing before a state court - for violating his bail terms. The guy's a crook.

(14,959 posts)over the past few years... I suspect Barr didn't bother interfering because there was nothing to be gained from it and only loss to be had.
A hugely influential global company told the DOJ they were being shaken-down.
The DOJ looked into it.
The facts were damning, and the relevant criminal statute clear.
Barr getting involved could only fuck it up by creating grounds for appeals and whatnot. He could clearly get what he wanted by sitting on his hands and doing nothing.
I guess it depends on how poorly Barr thinks of his line prosecutors and how arrogant he is. While the magnitudes of both are larger than they should be for a US AG, I don't know that they are large enough to predict that he'd completely shoot himself in the foot in this case.
In light of all this Roger Stone and Mike Flynn BS, you can bet that Avenatti will pursue this angle. Whether there is any there there is another question.
