Related: Editorials & Other Articles, Issue Forums, Alliance Forums, Region ForumsDear Jim Robinson: The Conventions are over. Romney is your candidate so I ask you this....
When will you be shutting down Free Republic?
Conservative site on Romney: 'Enemies of the constitution ... are not welcome here'
And in May, Robinson explicitly said Romney supporters are not welcome:
I'd rather shut the place down than be involved in any effort to install abortionist/gay rights pushing RINOS like Romney or Giuliani into the White House!! Do NOT push this crap on FR. Take your business elsewhere!!
Just curious!

(1,326 posts)He posted a thread a month or so ago that even though Romney wasn't his top choice, he now supports him because it's now more important to get Obama out. So much for "principles", eh? I laughed because I knew it would happen. You had to know even ol' Jim would eventually say "Yes, Daddy- Whatever you say" to the GOP he claimed to not be supporting this election due to their choice of Romney. It actually was a humorous post- he stated "I have spent my last sleepless night agonizing over this...".

He's got all the moral fiber of a wet noodle. The first one to run screaming around about revolution and armed rebellion and the first one to cower under his bed if the fighting starts and beg for mercy. If he's not too busy begging for money.
Living on Social Security and Disability and Medicare and screaming about people living off of government. Just another disgusting, small-brained twit like most tea-party members.

Jim Robinson is a fraud. He runs constant pleas for money, yet he has one of the worst run and worst managed websites on the net. It isn't due to traffic, it's due to his commitment that Free Republic is his vehicle to "I've got mine, screw you".
The second he gets enough of what he thinks is "his", regardless of what he says, he'll shut the place down and laugh his way into retirement.

(45,984 posts)He doesn't need to shut down FR because he's lost his argument with the wider GOP about the presidential nominee. After all, even today's GOP, folding up the big tent to become a party of racists, misogynists, homophobes, sectarian bigots, Ayn Rand devotees and the remnants of Birch Society fascists, still lets the aristocratic financial elitists into fold; that is a faction pays an awful lot of bills and decided that one of their own should be the standard bearer of the party.
Mr. Robinson has every right to reject Mitt Romney for his own reasons, which are quite different from my reasons for rejecting Mitt Romney. There are other candidates he can support, like Grady Warren. Hey, DU, remember him? Somebody posted the announcement of his candidacy for president here quite some time ago:
[center]
Now, there's a candidate JimRob can support. Grady Warren makes Mitt Romney (or Paul Ryan or Todd Akin or Michele Bachmann) look almost tolerable.
However, most right wing morons, perhaps even Jim Robinson himself, know that Grady Warren isn't going to be president. Maybe that idea to send blacks ("others races will follow" to re-education camps to "learn to be good Americans" sounds just wee bit too extreme, or maybe the irony of "we white men are tired of called racists" coming from the same source is just a wee bit too thick.
As for my tastes, Mitt Romney is too much like the racists, misogynists, homophobes, sectarian bigots, Ayn Rand devotees, the remnants of Birch Society fascists, the aristocratic financial elitists and other misfits that make up today's Republican party. Not all of the people at the GOP convention would have called Eisenhower a Communist, but they would have read him out of the GOP along with Arlen Specter, Richard Lugar or Warren Rudman and perhaps even Ronald Reagan for some ideological infraction or another. Most certainly they would read out George Romney.
I am far from happy with Barack Obama, but I am voting for him. At the very least, I think America will survive a little longer -- at least to the election of 2016 -- under four more years of Obama than it will under the racists, misogynists, homophobes, sectarian bigots, Ayn Rand devotees, the remnants of Birch Society fascists, the aristocratic financial elitists and other misfits that Mr. Romney has freely chosen to lead.

(45,984 posts)A cigarette ad was like any other TV commercial: loud, obnoxious and able to grab your attention like a steel trap. You still may not have taken up smoking if you grew up in the fifties and sixties, but you would have known they were pushing them.

BTW, I don't smoke, either.

I haven't checked this, but I think one uses "like" before a noun (or noun phrase) and "as" before a verb phrase.
Thus, "This guy sounds like an idiot" but "This guy babbles, as Republicans often do."
"Winston tastes good, like a cigarette should" (the line in the commercial) was incorrect because "a cigarette should" was a verb phrase.
Incidentally, the error got so much attention that Winston next ran a commercial taking off on the criticism: "What do you want, good grammar or good taste?"
Jack Rabbit
(45,984 posts)My English teacher brought it up on day.
Winston tastes good as a cigarette should (taste). There's your verb.
On the other hand, one could say Winston tastes like a cigarette. OK, so tell us something we don't know, Mr. Adman.
Jim Lane
(11,175 posts)AsahinaKimi wrote, "He sounds like an idiot." That's analogous to your example of "Winston tastes like a cigarette." In both instances, "like" is correct.
ETA: Given that I'd said that the commercial was incorrect, I was surprised (and irked) that you could so completely garble my meaning. Then I rechecked my post and saw that I had garbled my meaning. I noted that the commercial was incorrect but, in explaining that, said "noun phrase" when I meant "verb phrase". Apologies! I've fixed it now.
BTW, just to bring this digression back within hailing distance of the original topic, I'll mention that this kind of discussion pops up on DU but not on FR.

(11,175 posts)I've looked in on a few of the threads. The most common view is that Romney isn't all that great but that Obama is horrible. America can't survive four more years. This election is our last chance to save the country. A re-elected Obama will rule by decree and drive the country into socialistic ruin regardless of Congress. We have to vote against him and then, the day after the election, begin working to win back the Republican Party from the liberals like Romney (!) and/or building a true conservative third party.
There are also some fairly well-reasoned defenses of the basic approach that, in a two-party system, you fight for your beliefs in the primaries and then vote for the lesser of two evils in the general election.
If FR is any indication, we can't hope for many right-wingers to vote for Johnson (Libertarian Party) or Goode (Constitution Party) in a mirror image of the Nader follies of 2000.
