on my wife's FB page, a neighbor posted she'd been holding off but responded that Dems are so mean and hypocritical and Nancy was a nasty person.
My wife had a great response:
and then I had to chime in... (my wife isn't into politics in the near-obsessed way I am but she's become more vocal of late...love it)
I mean...Nancy ripped a copy of a lie-filled speech in half. She's so mean.

(40 posts)use to have patience and was willing to engage in dialogue with folks who support Mr Trump, but not anymore. it's all motivated reasoning and confirmation bias with them. their arguments are faulty and really don't refute the core issue of Mr. Trump.
as an anecdotal example, last week was talking with a person, who is in college (pre-med) about Mr. Trump's impeachment. one of the defenses offered for Mr. Trump's behavior was: but I think Democrats have been wanting to remove him since taking office. whether or not this statement is true is irrelevant to the actions of Mr. Trump. Did he not do what has been proven?
it's akin to saying, well the cop was just waiting for me to speed so they could write me a ticket.

I don't know how the fuck not, but you can't.
I used to be an R, and a friend I had breakfast with at a local eclectic neighborhood joint..
the kind of place where you sat next to people you didn't know to find an open seat...
he and I would just chit chat about stuff...
I finally realized that I didn't agree with anything Rs stood for, for the most part.
If he had come at me like that, I would have never seen the light.
My friend has long since past away, but I miss our conversations.

But facts did work on me.
Reading two articles from Seymour Hersh in late 2003 and one by Lt Col Karen Kwiatkowski opened my eyes to the Iraq War lies and started my turning away from republican to proud Democrat.

(10,140 posts)Or propaganda or culture or tradition.
Something convinces you. When you get more evidence, or you stop getting the propaganda, the brain washing stops or the indoctrination is over; when you move away from your culture or traditions, that's when you change.
I did not decide to believe in gravity. I was convinced by evidence. I stopped believing in God when the indoctrination stopped and I was able to rationally look at the evidence.
Now I wait for more evidence and admit when I don't know......well, sometimes, well, I try.

There are techniques to unlock it, but facts alone don't get the job done, when the initial belief of the person you are discussing it with is strong.

(8,197 posts)Whenever I see posts on DU or on social media mocking Republican voters, I try to imagine how I'd react if I read similar statements about Democrats.
Not only does it make Republicans dig in their heels, but I think it also turns off unaffiliated voters. Even within the Democratic community, some of us will say we're less likely to support certain candidates if we don't like their supporters.

(10,893 posts)Fiscal year 2019 ended September 30, 2019. Similarly for all the other fiscal years.
Note: all figures in this section are actual, not budgeted. I only point out that Bush signed the FY 2009 budget, and that Obama signed the FY 2017 budget.
And yes, the above numbers include payroll tax receipts (including Social Security) and Social Security benefits expenditures, since the above are unified budget numbers.

Aside: how it was spent (good read): https://www.cbpp.org/research/policy-basics-where-do-our-federal-tax-dollars-go
Regarding Obama's 8 years: FY 2017 federal spending is 463 B$ (13.2%) more than FY 2009 (the last Bush budgeted year).
Since the nominal (current dollar) GDP increased by 35.5% between FY 2009 (a recession low point) and FY 2017 (see next paragraph), while federal spending increased 13.2%, that means federal spending as a percentage of GDP dropped substantially during those 8 years -- from 24.46% of GDP to 20.42% of GDP (calculations below). Something to keep in mind when some rightie rants and raves about the socialist Obama spending us into the poor house.
Note: I am including FY 2017 as part of Obama's legacy because he signed the FY 2017 budget spending bills. FY 2017 runs from Oct. 1, 2016 thru Sept. 30, 2017 -- 3 2/3 months while Obama was president, and 8 1/3 months while Trump was president). Just like I assigned FY 2009 to Bush
In Current Dollars: GDP FY 2009 (2009 Q3) = $14,384.1 billion . GDP FY 2017 (2017 Q3) = $19,495.5 billion -- an increase of 35.5% over FY 2009.
Source of GDP figures: http://www.bea.gov/national/xls/gdplev.xls
where FY 2009 = Q4 2008 through Q3 2009. And FY 2017 = Q4 2016 through Q3 2017.
FY 2009: Spending / GDP = 3518/14384 = 24.46% . FY 2017: Spending / GDP = 3981/19496 = 20.42%
The Fiscal Year 2009 budget (Oct. 1, 2008 - Sept 30, 2009) was signed into law by G.W. Bush. The CBO on January 7, 2009 (13 days before Bush left office) projected a $1.2 trillion deficit for FY 2009. So all but about $200 billion of FY 2009 spending and deficits was "baked in" before Bush left office.

No matter what he does or says as long as he preaches his hate and fear..they will stick with him and since they did not make up their minds on logic, facts or even a sense of decency..appeals to logic, facts and decency will never change them.
Remember this saying when talking with Trumpers.
"Convince me against my will, and I will believe it still!"

(21,346 posts)Anyone who can overlook the Trump crimes and endorse him as a change agent without questioning what those changes are, is a lost cause. Sounds like an unthinking cultist or a person devoid of moral values and principles, or both.
But, there is something we must work on. We cannot get through to Trumpists by criticizing him or them. We need to appeal to them through what we can offer as an alternative. We are not as good at the negative approach as Republicans. We win when we offer inspiring visions. Think JFK, FDR, WJC, BHO. For those presidents, economics were a big issue. The overall economy is good now, but good wages are still an issue. Health care, climate change protections in vulnerable areas, educational improvements, infrastructure rebuilding are things we can offer. Most Americans support choice on abortion. People want Medicare and SS protected. The traitor party wants to cut them back and end them.
Forget spelling out Trump's crimes and negative personal qualities. They already know and choose to ignore or disbelieve. Appeal to their core selfishness with what we can do for them that Trump isn't doing. Let them know what he will take away from them, how he will harm them.

Barbara Boxer was onced asked by Whoopie in an interview how she thought she was viewed by others as a woman. She said, if a man stands up for himself, is proactive, and gets things done, everyone applauds and say he is a leader. If it's a woman she's a bitch.
