I always thought him a vacuous twit.
Today was his best moment. Years from now we will mostly remember how courageous he was with his vote and his speech. I may not like his politics but I must give him my respect today.
Thank you Governor.

I'd still never vote for him, but I do appreciate the gesture.

(1,023 posts)The cynical side of me also thinks maybe hes playing a long game of being the only Republican with integrity and a shot at the White House. Told you I was cynical.

(11,425 posts)Mormons that really believe wouldnt accept what Trump has done. Especially putting the kids in cages, they are all about families.
I have mormon neighbors super family people I cant imagine they could vote for Trump, I think they would stay home first.

(3,377 posts)To stand up against unwavering pressure and speak your voice and remain honorable. Stand up for your values and morals. I would have never thought it would come from Mitt Romney, though. But yes. I think this is his finest moment to date.

(13,479 posts)Be interesting to see where he goes from here. Utah seems to have a disconnect from the Republican party. Wouldn't it be a hoot if Trump lost Utah in the General election?

God, I hope his ego destroys him.

(11,605 posts)I never hated him the way I hate Trump, but I have a lot more respect for him after today. My 2012 vote was still one of the best votes I ever cast, but it wasn't really a vote against Romney - it was a vote for Obama.

(86,323 posts)He's actually a 50/50 in my view. He tends to be a decent guy but his adherence to his faith over rules his sense a good part of the time. Puritanical attitudes toward how everyone else lives and "foistering" your beliefs upon everyone in close proximity to you is a bit much. That and the pious manner of imparting this belief to others is truly annoying to the nonmembers of the club that favors misogyny and other leaning toward extremes ideology kind of negates a lot of the good he does.
But at least he plays a moralist on teevee.

(10,266 posts)Because he can be as pious as he needs to be for himself and so what?...and it's not like the Falwell's of the country will EVER REALLY consider his mormon ass 'brother'..
The thing that bothers me is his belief that neoliberal Vulture Capitalism is in any way defendable.
He wants to run as the republican that knows how to reign in wall street cause hes been there n knows how they think...I can respect that niche for him and still find a dem to vote for who believes the same thing! (But hes gonna have to pull one hell of a means culpa on that 'corporations are people, too' quote).

(86,323 posts)The vulture capitalism is his albatross but it's also a major tenet of his faith. To mormons, wealth is holiness. The wealthier you are the higher up in the church you get in their secret society. I live among them although in a less concentrated population now. I lived in Idaho for over a decade and I got a serious education about them there.
Several universities/colleges in the region have a building with Romney's name on it.
I wouldn't vote for him for anything because he's usually pretty self serving but today... I would have to say that it was his finest hour.
Volaris
(10,266 posts)and he knows hes not gonna get there without the 10 percent in the middle.
And this, was about THAT.

(14,565 posts)Not before this vote and especially not after this vote. He is viewed as a loser and now a traitor. He doesn't have 1% chance at the presidency. This is hardly Dick Nixon revisited.
Romney is one of the few who understand the big picture and long term perspective. This vote will ultimately be viewed as correct, so Romney's image and stature will improve. Trump will go down as one of the worst Americans of all time. Romney's name will be quickly summoned as the one Republican gutsy enough to vote for his conviction. Names like Susan Collins and Lisa Murkowski will drift into obscurity.
