What's up with the Lincoln commercial...

...where Matthew McConaughey goes ice fishing and hears a bird tweet the opening bars of the Andy Griffith show theme song, and he whistles the rest of it? What am I failing to understand here?

But still kind of a mysterious message for a $75,000 car. “Because it reminds me of 50 year old TV show I liked?”

64. Lincoln's rationale (of sorts)

“We’ve created this upfront scene that isn’t exactly real,” said Jon Pearce, global chief creative officer of Hudson Rouge, who produced the spot. “It’s picturesque, it’s based in reality, but it represents this fray — a feeding frenzy of other brands’ obsessive focus on just performance. You can see these anonymous cars in the smoke — if you look closely, you can even see a bit of a shark fin — alluding to the excesses with the glimpses you see, but it’s reflecting a truthful observation.”

So, a couple of luxury shots that aren’t in the :30. I guess it’s enough. I’d still like to hear how the agency pitched it.

I had a dog back in the day who who ran to the door whenever that song came on TV — his signal for his last walk of the day. I even conditioned a later generation of dogs to do the same thing. But ice fishing from a Lincoln never entered my mind. Not very imaginative, I guess.

32. Maybe it helps to know the lyrics to the song

That being said, probably one percent of the population know the lyrics.

Well, now, take down your fishin' pole and meet me at The Fishin' Hole,
We may not get a bite all day, but don't you rush away.

What a great place to rest your bones and mighty fine for skippin' stones,
You'll feel fresh as a lemonade, a-settin' in the shade.

Whether it's hot, whether it's cool, oh what a spot for whistlin' like a fool.

What a fine day to take a stroll and wander by The Fishin' Hole,
I can't think of a better way to pass the time o' day.

We'll have no need to call the roll when we get to The Fishin' Hole,
There'll be you, me, and Old Dog Trey, to doodle time away.

If we don't hook a perch or bass, we'll cool our toes in dewy grass,
Or else pull up a weed to chaw, and maybe set and jaw.

Hangin' around, takin' our ease,
Watchin' that hound a-scratchin' at his fleas.

Come on, take down your fishin' pole and meet me at The Fishin' Hole,
I can't think of a better way to pass the time o' day.

That is, unless you're a jazz musician

EVERYBODY covered Harlem Nocturne, but Johnny Otis's cover is my favorite (Rene Bloch's Alto Sax totally screams Film noir)

Oh yeah, I'd be remiss if I didn't post Andy singing The Fishin' Hole. He really had a comfortable, easy voice.

he's relaxing in the back of his Lincoln SUV. Privilege. All of the Lincoln ads are about privilege.

I own a Lincoln, so I don't have to do things the way people without my privilege do.

That's what Lincoln is selling - privilege.

Buy a Lincoln! You deserve it!

Simple.

would be preferable to trudging back across the ice when you think you've caught a fish. Sitting in the open hatch of any car (even a Lincoln) looks awfully cold to me.

I have a feeling the people who wrote this ad have never done any ice fishing.

61. Oh, I'm sure the creative people on that ad have never been ice-fishing.

However, most of their target audience never has either. The actor's smug satisfaction when the flag on the tip-up comes up is what they're selling. Message: "Your Lincoln SUV gives you the success you deserve...with comfort and luxury."

I don't think the ice-fishing ad is a very successful ad, but the series of ads is pushing the whole "deserved privilege" concept. It targets the reasons people would buy such an expensive version of what is really just another Ford.

It's aimed at an emotional response from a certain set of viewers. It wasn't created for people who go ice fishing, really. That's not its audience.

Most of the animal protein we ate as children was fish my dad caught in the ocean.

Our freezer was full of fish.

The only luxury car we ever had was an old Cadillac my dad's parents had given us when our family car's engine failed. This Cadillac, which soon smelled of fish as well, later spontaneously combusted, possibly in shame.

The implied message is that climate change is not real -- there is still ice and fish -- so buy one more ancient gas guzzler, go out and do some more damage. Drive over endangered species. Park on top of a turtles' nest. Crank the heat up to 78. No need for friends, sanity or tiny animals: You've got a Lincoln!

Unless you live in the arctic. I've lived near a small man made lake for about 28 years now. In the first seven years the lake froze over every winter and there would be oodles of kids, adults and young boys playing hockey and ice skating. There would also always be an awful lot of ice shanties most of the winter. Now I rarely see an ice shanty - last year maybe a couple of times and never does anyone ice skate or play hockey. This year it hasn't even frozen over and it barely did last year, and I'm in Michigan.

62. What's up with the Lincoln Commercial

According to a report by Lincoln, it's all about ASMR

a feeling of well-being combined with a tingling sensation in the scalp and down the back of the neck, as experienced by some people in response to a specific gentle stimulus, often a particular sound.
"ASMR is triggered by things like whispering voices, paper tearing, and scalp massage"
