2. Saw this movie yesterday on TCM Things to come from 1936
Last edited Sat Jan 4, 2020, 07:04 PM - Edit history (2) The dictator type guy controlled the people by continuous war and made a comment that it’s better to control people by war and fear. They then went into the future 2026 the same actor but different character said science is bad and that you can’t trust science and turned the people against the the peace loving scientists who were trying for a better world for its citizens. He used fear to control an uprising. I thought it reminded me of Fox and the right wing media propaganda that has made at least 35% of our population into chickens supporting colonel sanders.
The was originally a story written by HG wells but I couldn’t help think it was prophetic to what is going on currently. |

4. Things to Come
The title is “Things to Come”, in case anyone is interested in looking it up. It’s a British film from 1936, directed by William Cameron Menzies the great Production Designer (“Gone With the Wind”). Stars Raymond Massey and Ralph Richardson. A good movie. Rare serious science fiction film from the 30s.

16. Agree. When I sucked at that teat I knew it was just another WPA
Works Progress Administration.
A way to pacify a lot of otherwise unemployable people that might have become "discontented" with the imbalance in control and money. Most of my co-workers within the Pentagon and around the beltway knew they were being given make work. Good salaries, impressive titles, high security clearances. But still just a way for the MIC to maintain control. |

6. Gingrich commented on this about 10+ years ago. The "Long War" will last about 70 years, he stated
during which time the US will specialize in weapons and security systems. (C-Span interview). Large groups truly believe this and will do their utmost to make it reality.

23. You mean hard for the likes of Amazon and Google to fill their coffers?
Not being argumentative. You'd probably agree that a bomb is dead money. It sits idly and consumes money without producing anything. A machine tools makes tools and parts. A programmer's workstation produces code. Of course, we must never forget that a teacher produces citizens and a Medicare-for-all treatment produces years of production from a person. |

just open his eyes to history. This game's been going on for hundreds of years, and in this country since before the Civil War.

Going back to some of the learned texts of warfare from China and early Europe. Conniving and skulduggery may be part of our primal/primate heritage.

12. This is WHY we have to fight to protect our democracy,
which is founded on the principles of equality and government of, by and for the people, most of whom, at least, naturally say a big no to this shit.
Note that this quote describes a standard attitude of HIERARCHICAL authoritarian governments for keeping power. While liberals are naturally egalitarian, conservatives tend to be naturally hierarchical, most particularly strong conservatives. The Republican leadership, serving the new kleptocratic and plutocratic classes they helped create, are trying to move America to a hierarchical, authoritarian power structure. But how funny to see this. Strange as it sounds, I never read 1984. So just last night in bed when I found it while searching Kindle Prime, I downloaded and started reading it. It's grabby, but I have to learn Newspeak. ![]() |
