What do you know about Joy Harjo? I'm freaking out that I just heard about her -Native American po

Recently named Native American Port Laureate

On her blog she writes about Native American voices being silenced, falsehoods on her Wiki page that she has not been able to correct, the enduring legacy of Andrew Jackson--Hitler claimed he learned from Jackson how to exterminate groups of people

She was born in my city, has won many poetry and music awards---where have I been that I'm just finding out about her??

1. I think if you are in touch with the poetry world

you would hear about her.

I posted about her in the poetry group when I heard about it.

2. Obviously you're right. I need to expand my horizons. But reading poetry can hurt

It opens your heart in often very painful ways

Just the bit of her poetry and prose--which hits like her poetry does--I read just now was painful

3. she's really amazing. I saw her perform once at OU. It was breathtaking.

I don't know her personally, but have a few mutual friends, all of whom say she is as amazing as a person as she is a poet and performer. I was so happy that she was named U.S. Poet Laureate, and I'm happy that you're discovering her, bobbieinok!
