Russian spy ship off US coast operating in 'unsafe manner,' officials say

https://www.cnn.com/2019/12/16/politics/russian-ship-us-coast/index.html

Washington (CNN)A Russian spy-ship has returned to international waters off the southeastern coast of the United States and is operating in what two US officials told CNN is an "unsafe manner."

The Viktor Leonov, a Russian surveillance ship, has been sailing off the coast of South Carolina and Florida in the last few days, one official told CNN, adding that the ship's actions were determined to be unsafe because it is not using running lights in low visibility weather and it is not responding to hails from commercial vessels attempting to establish its position in order to help avoid potential accidents.

The official said the Vishnya-class spy ship was also engaged in "other erratic maneuvers."

A US Coast Guard official told CNN that the Coast Guard was broadcasting a "Marine Safety Information Bulletin" to alert mariners in the area to the Russian ship's presence and its behavior.

So that could be the "wag the dog" after he is impeached.

Thought they were just here to pick him up. Perhaps they will leave a few thing behind as well. Fire in the hole.

20. I run a boat on the St Johns, I'll keep an eye out in case they invade Mayport.

Might explain why the Coast Guard had their heads on too tight this past week.

11. wait, wut?

There's a Russian spy ship in US waters loitering around undersea communications cables?

And the US would be okay with that as long as it turned it's running lights on?

17. It is in international waters

And it is a frequent visitor. I spent 20 years in the navy - being met by a Soviet spy ship when we left port was a routine occurrence.

But what do I know.

18. Typical Russian spying

With the Russian Navy's track record its just as likely that the lights broke and dont work as it is that they are purposely off. Also, the Russians spying off shore in international waters is pretty common. They enjoy watching the traffic in and out of our naval bases and they love congregating around undersea cables and at the edge of our naval weapon test ranges. And from what I hear, our sailors enjoy mooning the Russian "research vessel" or "fishing trawler" that happens to get close.
