For people who have given up Facebook/fast food/soda/cable TV/whatever percieved vice or ill:

You are the captain of your own ship, the master of your own soul.

Whatever you do in your life which you believe makes you live a more fulfilling and/or healthier life, and whatever you choose to remove from your life or retain in your life, kudos to you for your personal decision.

May your decisions give you greater clarity in your life so you can proceed forward a more focused and/or healthier human being.

That being said....

You really don't need to broadcast your personal life choice to the world just to get back pats.

Really, you don't.

Don't get us wrong, we're happy for you. We really are.

But honestly, we really don't care.

people make connections which is why many people come here. I think stifling that is not healthy.

DU is big enough for you to find the parts you like and ignore the parts you don't.

Personally, I am much more addicted to DU than I am to facebook or tv. I know it's not healthy.

If there is a thread in general discussion about animal abuse you are gonna have to deal with me talking about veganism. And I would have to know that people will probably get angry at me or making fun of me for posting about that and I gotta let it slide.

That's the way it should be.

ON TYRANNY: TWENTY LESSONS ON FIGHTING TYRANNY FROM THE TWENTIETH CENTURY
Timothy Snyder
Yale University

Americans are no wiser than the Europeans who saw democracy yield to fascism, Nazism or communism. Our one advantage is that we might learn from their experience. Now is a good time to do so. From across the fearful twentieth century, here are twenty lessons about what it takes to oppose tyranny, adapted to the circumstances of today.

8. Stand out. Someone has to. It is easy to follow along. It can feel strange to do or say something different. But without that unease, there is no freedom. Remember Rosa Parks. The moment you set an example, the spell of the status quo is broken, and others will follow.

I like seeing more and more people waking up to ditch the RusProp delivery system masquerading as a social website that was founded to rate girls' faces at college.

I dropped FB and weeks ago dropped Instagram. It was a huge time suck and creeping bot playground.

We must take care of what we allow into our homes, screens, and brains.

Please feel free to share what's going on in your lives to the extent we all feel comfortable.

You don't care.

Don't speak for me. I lost 75 pounds in the recent past, and I only could have done it with the support of the VIDEO GAME FORUM community I belonged to. I posted progress pics and had several discussions with members throughout the process. THEY made it possible because I wasn't alone on my journey.

I applaud every single person who gets on here and says they are quiting "x" for "y" reason. We need to support each other because there are "we" out there who do actually care.

Tommy, if you ever have trouble with anything at all and need our support, WE will be here to help you any time.

Never understood the ones who proclaim from the “highest mountain” that they have given up cable tv and or just tv. I don’t care, really, what one gives up. Perhaps all of you are just a trifle annoying for feeling the need for proclamations. I have given up nothing and am totally in awe of myself.

And whether it annoys you or not, it’s worth thinking about for a minute.

From really, really, silly shit, like the toilet paper has to roll over the top of the roll, or the toilet paper has to roll off the bottom of the roll, all the way up to people who feel like they have to own an AR15, and people who don’t think AR15s should have been invented. This is about human nature.

Creamy peanut butter or chunky peanut butter? Stupid question right? But under certain conditions people come to blows over questions like this. Right now people are flipping you shit on this thread for posting a complaint about people announcing they have a complaint! Congratulations! You’ve reached the level of meta-complaining!

”You really don’t need to broadcast your personal life choice to the world just to get back pats”
........these are people who chose to join facebook. Which is designed specifically to let you broadcast your personal life to the world IN DETAIL. And despite the fact that occasionally FB will behave so badly that a percentage will start one of these “quit facebook” movements, it never lasts. Again it’s about human nature, and any time something presses a button on you it might be worth it to stop and do a little self examination about why?

...just as a constant diet of fast food and soda will damage the rest of your body.

I wouldn't know about Facebook. My only social media vice is DU.

We've been without any "traditional" television in our house over ten years, no cable, no satellite, no broadcast. Our television plays DVDs and Netflix. That's all it does.

I'm not saying this to get "back pats," I'm just saying my own life seems a little brighter without television. Yes, I do encourage others to try it, but I don't really care if they do or they don't.

My octogenarian parents, and my wife's parents, still watch traditional television. Their grandchildren don't.

For better or worse the internet and "smart" cell phones changed everything.

If you really want to see me rant ask me why I recommend Linux for sophisticated computer users, and Chromebooks or Android devices for everyone else.

Don't fucking bother me with your Windows or Apple problems. Guns and automobiles are tools of the devil as well.
