Netflix has some outstanding documentaries about WWII

Yesterday I binge watched a couple of them and I want to recommend them. There’s a series called Greatest Events of WWII In Color.

It covers both the war in Europe and Russia and in the Pacific and even though I’ve watched my share of WWII documentaries there seems to be a lot more footage than I’ve ever seen before. The colorization gives it new life and is very well done.

I know many have seen it but if you’re one of those people who think you’ve pretty much seen all the footage there is you’ll be very surprised.

The other one is of the Hollywood directors who went to film the war. The title is something like Five Returned. You’ll catch their footage in the other documentaries.

3. I have to recommend a WW1 documentary that's on HBO.

It was in selected theaters earlier in the year, but HBO has it now.

It’s called “They Shall Not Grow Old.” It’s colorized and fixed up for modern adudiences.

Really a good film, though much is hard to watch.

4. Five Came Back is an American documentary based on the 2014 book Five Came Back:

A Story of Hollywood and the Second World War by journalist Mark Harris.

The documentary focuses on five directors – John Ford, William Wyler, John Huston, Frank Capra, and George Stevens – whose war-related works are analysed by modern filmmakers, respectively Paul Greengrass, Steven Spielberg, Francis Ford Coppola, Guillermo del Toro, and Lawrence Kasdan.

Meryl Streep, who serves as narrator, won the Primetime Emmy Award for Outstanding Narrator for her performance.

5. Thanks!

Yes, that’s it! I tried looking it up in Netflix but couldn’t find it.

After watching that I realized that footage of the battle of Midway was shot by Houston.

I wonder if footage which George Stevens locked away is some of the footage used in this documentary.

There was a lot of footage of the Barbarossa campaign from both sides which I’ve never seen before. The Russian scorched earth practice and a lot of footage of Stalingrad during the campaign is used.

7. There are two documentaries with "WWII in color" in the title

And they’re both good. Just to be sure the one I’m talking about is one that starts with “Greatest Events of WWII in color”.
