Bernard Tyson, CEO of Kaiser Permanente, passes away 'unexpectedly'

Bernard J. Tyson, the chairman and CEO of the health plan provider Kaiser Permanente, passed away in his sleep on Sunday.

One day earlier, Tyson spoke at a tech gathering in Oakland, California, called AfroTech where he appeared to be in good spirits, sharing photos on Twitter. The health care executive was 60 years old.

Kaiser Permanente issued a statement late Sunday saying, "On behalf of our Board of Directors, employees and physicians, we extend our deepest sympathies to Bernard's family during this very difficult time." The company said Tyson "unexpectedly passed away early today in his sleep."

The company, which offers the nation's largest not-for-profit health plan, called Tyson "an outstanding leader, visionary and champion for high-quality, affordable health care for all Americans." During his time as CEO, the company's health care memberships grew from 9 million to 12.3 million. Revenue grew from $53 billion in 2013 to more than $80 billion, according to the company website.

3. Why the scare quotes? Even 20 year old college students have been known to die in their sleep...

Not everything is a conspiracy.

7. Actually, I think those are quote quotes.

From the article: The company said Tyson "unexpectedly passed away early today in his sleep."

9. We've been with Kaiser for decades. We have had very few complaints in all those years.

Tyson will be missed. He built a highly rated HMO that treats its members fairly and with care.

Condolences to those who loved him.

11. I want to switch.

I have Blue Shield right now and it is an absolute nightmare to get an appointment or even so much as go to an urgent care facility.

13. "...selected among Time magazine's 50 Most Influential People in Health Care for 2018"

Tyson was a positive force in U.S.A. healthcare.

My wife and I both grew up in the Kaiser Health care system, and stayed on into our late 'twenties.

If we hadn't moved away to places where Kaiser is not available I suppose we'd still have it.

I have nothing nice to say about the health insurance we've suffered since.
