'A nightmare scenario' for Republicans: GOP panicking as voters increasingly abandon party

‘A nightmare scenario’ for Republicans: GOP panicking as voters increasingly abandon party in the Trump era

Published 2 hours ago on November 10, 2019By Tom Boggioni

A Washington Post report on this past week’s election in Virginia pointed out that the Republican Party is grappling with how to stem the flow of previously reliable voters who are turning their backs on them and either voting for Democrats or straying home and sitting out elections.

As the report notes, “A GOP candidate hasn’t won statewide office in Virginia since 2009. On Tuesday, Democrats gained majorities in both houses of the General Assembly for the first time in a generation; the House of Delegates swung from a 66-34 Republican edge in 2017 to a 55-45 Democratic advantage for next year’s session.”

Republican campaign manager Daniella Propati watched as her candidate for the House of Delegates, GayDonna Vandergriff, lost despite running on a campaign accusing her opponent of “socialism” which apparently made no impact on voters.

“Republicans — we’ve been running campaigns in Virginia the same way for 20 years,” Propati said. “We need to come together and say, ‘What do we need to do next time?’ ”

2. In Kentucky, Republican turnout was up dramatically ( I believe 40%).

The reason the Democrat won in a squeaker was because Democrat turnout was also way up.

GOTV!

3. Some local knowledge- Bolling (quoted in article) and Schuyler VanVelkenburg

Bolling is a perfect example of the GOP's problem. In 2013 he was a LOCK to win the Governorship. Even following McDonnell, the Bollings have been around for centuries here. The Va GOP wanted then Atty General Ken Cuccinelli THE COOCH bad. They rejected a primary and went to a convention. Bolling, who was trailing in polls, dropped out. Robert Sarvis - this was in the Hey day of the Teabagers - ran as an independent and got 6.5% of the vote. Terry MacAuliffe had the governorship drop in his lap.

Candidates matter. Spanberger is a perfect example - a perfect perfect pick to win the 7th. Schuyler VanVelkenburg is another. A teacher who knows a lot of people in the Va. House 72nd. That district even after the redistricting is nuts.

The Va Dems have created a great ground game and have reached out to even the tiniest local groups. Showing up to meetings to make presentations and creating word of mouth networks.

Many of our friends - via our daughter - are generally 10-15 years younger than us. Obama got them interested but Trump woke them the hell up.
