As PBS Did With Nixon, Bill Moyers Calls for Primetime Airing of Trump Impeachment Hearings

"Pull out the stops once again, and for the sake of the nation, throw away the schedule," writes luminary of public broadcast journalism in full-page ad. "Who wins? Democracy—and viewers like you."
by
Jake Johnson, staff writer

With the House set to hold its first public impeachment hearings next week as part of the impeachment inquiry into President Donald Trump, renowned public broadcast journalist Bill Moyers took out a full-page ad in the Friday print edition of the New York Times calling on PBS to carry the hearings live on television and re-air them in primetime every night, just as it did during the Nixon impeachment proceedings.

"Now, during yet another great Constitutional crisis, it's time for PBS to stand up again—to air the Trump impeachment hearings live during the day and repeat them in the evening primetime hours," reads the ad (pdf), which Moyers co-authored with longtime collaborator and Common Dreams senior writing fellow Michael Winship.

"Plenty of Americans still rely on good old broadcast TV to get the word," the ad—which appears on page 5—continues. "Hearken, PBS: Pull out the stops once again, and for the sake of the nation, throw away the schedule and air the Trump impeachment hearings in prime-time. Who wins? Democracy—and viewers like you."

1. PBS, heed the words of your elder statesman

Show that some vestige of journalistic integrity remains within your organization.

4. Yes, I agree. Not because it's against Trump, but

because a U.S. President sold out our country for personal gain.

The American public needs to hear and understand this. I want Americans to know, and to feel some of the anger and fear and heartbreak this man has caused so many of us.

He is endangering our National Security and in this instance, he endangered the lives in a nation who is an ally and a nation we swore to keep safe.

If this president were a Democrat I would feel the same. But Democrats don't elect traitorous Democrats. There's no such thing. We would NEVER become Soviet-enablers.

29. yeah, but how much will be missed due to Judy Woodruff pontificating?

She loves to hear herself speak and is surrounded by others who think their voices and insight are more important than original coverage.

10. Yes. These should be accessible to everyone.

Regardless of whether you're a cable subscriber or not. It's bad enough that faux news frequently falls in cheaper cable packages than MSNBC, C-SPAN is cable-based and not gonna work for those watching TV over the air.

23. You mean, as if the hearings are more important than whether Dr. Thighbone

Gets back together with Penny Fishmouf before he finds out she's carrying the villainous millionaire dentist's baby?

__

I'm seeing some reports from sources I don't know well enough to link here that CBS may broadcast the hearings live during the day with heavy coverage in primetime news. Decided to post my snark until I can confirm such.

Wanted to verify over at CBS, but their site wouldn’t resolve on my machine, then got distracted with dinner.

I am serious about wanting this coverage widely available.
