Trump to launch new black voter initiative from downtown Atlanta [View all]

President Donald Trump plans to use Atlanta as a launching pad for his new African American coalition with a Friday rally at the Georgia World Congress Center.

The president will kick off the Black Voices for Trump Coalition initiative at 3 p.m. Friday at the downtown Atlanta convention center after a high-dollar fundraiser in Buckhead to support U.S. Sen. David Perdue.

He’s expected to highlight recent statistics that show low unemployment rates for black workers as well as an opportunity zone program tucked into the Republicans’ 2017 tax-cut legislation that is designed to encourage investors to pump money into struggling areas.

Trump’s campaign picked Atlanta for his rollout because of its role as an epicenter of black life and the region’s fast-growing African American population, according to a senior White House official. Vice President Mike Pence is set to address the crowd, too.

The Black Voices for Trump coalition launch is kicking off Nov. 8 with a 3 p.m. rally at the Georgia World Congress Center. During the rally, Trump is expected to address the black unemployment rate and highlight a program in the Republicans’ 2017 tax-cut legislation that encourages investors to put money into underserved communities.

“Black Americans have never had a better champion than President Trump,” Katrina Pierson, senior advisor at Donald J. Trump for President Inc., wrote in a statement emailed to Newsweek. “The Black Voices for Trump coalition will be a national effort to mobilize and empower Black Americans who support President Trump to help get the message of ‘Promises Made, Promises Kept’ into communities across America.”

She added, “Under President Trump, unemployment for African Americans has reached historic lows and nearly 1.4 million new jobs have been added for African Americans. Black Americans’ strong support for President Trump will ensure a second term for the President.”

President Trump will also host a lunch to try to drum up support for U.S. Sen. David Perdue. The price of admission is $2,800 and will require more than $100,000 to attend a private roundtable with President Trump. If a person wants to take a photo with the President, it will cost $35,000. Vice President Mike Pence is expected to join him and speak to the audience as well.

In 2016, almost 8% of black people voted for Trump. A recent poll conducted by the Associated Press-NORC Center for Public Affairs Research showed that just 4% of those in the black community believe the president’s actions have benefited them.

U.S. Sen. David Perdue will bookend this week in Georgia politics, beginning with a noon appearance today before Atlanta Rotarians.

The soon-to-be-senior senator will end it on Friday afternoon with a top-dollar Atlanta fundraiser featuring President Donald Trump, who is likely to be the defendant in an impeachment trial next year, with members of the U.S. Senate as jurors.
