With Democratic Presidents making new treaties/agreements/etc. when they're in office only to have them repeatedly overturned, shredded, or withdrawn by succeeding Republican Presidents, how can we maintain the trust of other countries to live up to and honor our agreements (if we even can)? George W. Bush took us out of several agreements that Bill Clinton negotiated and now Trump is doing the same with many of the ones entered into under Barack Obama. How can we solidify these agreements so that we can keep the Republicans from simply walking away from our commitments? This is going to be an increasingly ugly situation IMHO while trying to get any kind of future cooperation with other countries.

(24,402 posts)but obviously that can't happen with the WH pretty consistently turning over at least every 8 years since 2000 (though hopefully we break that cycle in 2020 with a single 4 year term for Trump!) and a vast amount of the populace obsessed with blindly following their Republican overlords off the cliff.

(24,402 posts)but why would that be a general aim of the Republican Party since 2000? Republicans *used* to believe in honoring treaties (or so I thought?). Now, all they want to do is rip them up. And now that I am thinking about it, I can't think of any treaties they've actually done while in office. Does anybody remember any treaties GWB signed while in office? It seems like all they do is claim that all of the treaties that Democrats negotiate are flawed, but instead of simply renegotiating them and/or making adjustments to what they claim is flawed, they just rip them up wholesale and throw whatever's left in the shredder.

(7,733 posts)They will *have* to deal with us. We get our President in and get some dignity and gravitas back in the office. Trump has opened up surreptitious avenues of negotiation which will be closed with an honest administration. These back channels have always been there for exploitation. The upside is some bad actors have been exposed. There will be mistrust, as always, on all sides.
We keep plugging ahead with our agenda. Our leadership will be able to make agreements. Our country isnt the only one going through shaky times. We will get our prestige and respect back with good people at the helm. The State Department will get fully staffed and be an effective, proud organization.
