California fires: Goats help save Ronald Reagan Presidential Library

Goats from a ranch near the Reagan Library were also rescued from the Easy Fire

A hungry herd of 500 goats has helped save the Ronald Reagan Presidential Library from the California wildfires.

In May, the library hired the goats to clear flammable scrub surrounding the complex as a preventative measure.

The goats ate the brush, creating a fire break that slowed the flames and gave firefighters extra time to react.

The library near Los Angeles was threatened by the Easy Fire, the latest in a spate of fires causing evacuations and power cuts across the state.

The caprine contractors included Vincent van Goat, Selena Goatmez and Goatzart. They helped save exhibits including an Air Force One jet and a piece of the Berlin Wall.

"We were told by one of the firefighters that they believe that fire break made their job easier," Melissa Giller, a library spokeswoman, told Reuters.

2. St Raygun had books?

Somehow I think of his relationship with books as being about the same as W's.

4. Goats are really great. They're even used in portable pens to clear private and public land

where poison oak grows. And the goats eat the poison oak with relish!

5. Do they bring their own

relish or are we supposed to have it on hand so they can eat the poison ivy?

Sorry, that just cracked me up. Picturing goats with a jar and knife.
I'll show myself out.

9. Well, ever since I first heard the word "relish" used as an adverb instead of a noun I've tried to

use it that way too. I always find it hilarious and I pass the torch of my efforts on to you!

7. I have been to the Reagan and Nixon Libraries despite definitely not being partisans of the two.

You would hardly recognize them as they are portrayed in their libraries.

14. There's a lot of hagiography, isn't there?

Have only been to Reagan's, as it it a day trip from where I live and they have travelling non-Reagan exhibits come through that my friends want to see. Though none of us is Republican, we found the historical stuff interesting, too -- Air Force One, Marine One, and the life size Oval Office, among others. Good lunchroom, too.

Other than that, we felt we were surrounded by worshippers of another religion, and kept a respectful demeanor...

18. A lot of hagiography and the Nixon Library celebrates all his "progressive" achievements

A lot of hagiography and the Nixon Library celebrates all his "progressive" achievements like the EPA, affirmative action, and the opening to China.

I will say it right now. Neither was as contemptible as Trump.

13. Goats are the most awesome of animals.

Much better at cleaning brush and weeds than Roundup and other poisons. Plus their milk makes great cheese.

And please don't diss the goats because it was Reagan's library. We are better than that.

Goats are much better than rakes to clear brush. On the other end you get milk and cheese too!

26. GOATS!

I love my goats and now we know they are better than raking! We need more goats in this world to do things like get rid of weeds so farmers can alternate areas of seeding and save the land. Also to keep the grasses in control. GOATS!

27. Well the National Archives people can think out of the box....

the NY Bridge Authority Head was lambasted for using goats around the bridges. That all stopped when they got the bill, goat work for cheap whereas humans need potty and coffee breaks , etc.
