(1,660 posts)Bar is not dysfunctionally insane, like Trump.
With him as AG we're heading straight for a black hole.

(6,172 posts)which concluded that the Russians indeed meddled in the 2016 election, I don't think the Barr "investigation" has any chance of being anything more than a carefully orchestrated plot to discredit the Mueller Report and the Impeachment inquiry.
It is essentially a case of the Attorney General of the United States engaging in obstruction of justice, at the direction of the President.
Just like Bengazi, it won't go anywhere because it has no where to go.
There will be a lot of noise, mostly from Trump, certain Congressional and FOX news presidential cheerleaders, and, of course, Trump's base.
William Barr is digging a deep hole for himself; one that will end up being impossible for him to climb out of.
In the long run, this will hurt Trump more than it helps him.
I think it's an act of desperation.

(2,596 posts)As ominous and authoritarian a move this is on Barr's part, my take is that secretly Barr doesn't really hold out much hope that he'll really find anything and he's going through the motions simply to placate tRump who is unwinding like a too-tight watch spring right now. You've got to imagine how explosive tRump's behavior is and I'm sure Barr probably gets a dozen frantic cell calls from Shitler on a daily basis. Hell, I'd go on a foreign excursion myself on a snipe hunt just to escape Shitler's beck and call. I've got to wonder how many 3 a.m. phone calls from this unraveling sicko he's had to take in the past five months or so. I appreciate the fact that Barr is a wingnut ideologue beholden to Opus Dei and a secret believer that the United States should never have removed itself from Britain's control, but I'm skeptical that even he believes he's really going to find something on which to skewer the impetus for the Mueller investigation. I don't dismiss the very real possibility that he can manipulate a fact to make someone look bad, though. The truth is, he really doesn't need to look into the past to try to accuse someone of wrongdoing. He could do that by using some process violation on those within the justice and intelligence agencies to persecute a tRump-indentified "enemy."
